Calum: ik luke. It just hurts
Luke: baby what hurts? Tell me what's wrong
Calum: everything. They're fighting again. I'm scared luke
Luke: don't be scared. I'm right here. everything's gonna be okay, darling
Calum: luke...
Luke: yes love?
Calum: Mali just left...
Luke: oh baby. I'm so sorry
Calum: Luke, can I...can i possibly maybe call you? im afraid
Luke: oh cal, ofc you can
Calum sighs, pressing his phone to his ear. It rings only twice before it clicks and he hears shuffling on the other end.
"Cal? Babe?" He hears his long-distance boyfriend's voice, sighing in satisfaction.
"Hi, Lukey."
Luke sighs as if he's been holding his breath for ages. "Calum, princess, are you okay?"
Calum's eyes prickle with tears, mostly because of the shouts, doors slamming, and broken things, and partly because it had been so long since he heard the sweet sound of his boyfriend's voice.
Luke and Calum had been set up by their friends, Ashton and Michael, who were also dating long-distance. They had been dating longer, so they gave Cake pointers and advice. Right now, they were in Alaska on some vacation thing or something.
It didn't take long for Calum to open up to Luke about his life at home, but it still took around a month. Ever since the night Calum first told Luke about his family, was the night they became boyfriends.
They've longed to see each other in person, but it just hasn't happened yet. It's like Calum is being torn, bit by bit, everytime he hears Luke, but can't see him. He was already torn enough by his alcoholic mother and abusive father, let alone his neglecting and bi-polar sister. The only person Calum could really talk to was Michael, until he set him up with Luke, who promised to get Calum out of his house someday.
"When I get a real job, and enough money, I'm taking you and me both away from here. There's something better out there for us Cal, just waiting for us, and we need to go find it." Luke had said this once over the phone, a few days after Calum spilled his secrets.
Calum smiled at the memory, excited for when the day might finally come.
"Calum?" Luke's voice breaks him out of his thoughts.
"Hey..." Calum smiles fondly, yet sadly.
"Are...are you okay?" His sad voice breaks through the static.
The boy answers honestly, his breath shaking slightly, "N-no. I'm not. I don't think I'll ever be okay, Luke."
"Oh, baby." He starts, and Calum can almost see his sad, blue eyes.
Then he sighs, "Everything will be okay. Just tell me what's on your mind."
Calum takes a deep breath, tears threatening to spill over his eyes. They do, warm, and replacing the dried ones from earlier that day. "I don't want to be here," he ays in a choked out sob.
"What do you mean? Just let it all out."
Now the tears are streaming down Calum's face, onto his bed and his clothes, pulling at his hair with his free hand. "It hurts!" He cries. He doesn't worry about anyone hearing, since everyone in his house has left already. "L-Luke, it sucks! I hate this life! I don't want to be here! I hate it!" He screams, pouring out all of his frustration and anger into it. Luke speaks, but Calum can't hear him. "I wish my mom wasn't an alcoholic! I wish my dad wasn't abusive! I wish my sister could get some stupid help! I wish I could get out of here!"
"Calum!" Luke cuts in after he's finished ranting, Calum panting into the phone. "Calum, listen to me. Look, I was waiting to tell you until tomorrow, but I need to tell you now."
Calum listens intently on the other line, his jumbled brain having trouble focusing on Luke.
Luke takes a deep breath and Calum wipes his tears with his comforter.
"I've been saving up a lot of money lately," he starts slowly. "And I asked my parents to help me buy a plane ticket..."
Calum's breath hitches, suddenly more interested in the conversation, "Luke?"
"Sh. Let me explain." Another pause. "I bought a one-way ticket from there to here." He starts talking faster now. "My parents said you can stay at our house- we already cleared out Ben's room since he's at college. I know it's not very organized and it's kind of last minute, but I just thought-"
"Yes," Calum whispers, stopping him.
"What?" He breathes out.
"Yes," The raven-haired boy says, louder this time. "Yes, yes, yes, yesyesyes, a million times yes!" Calum gets more excited the longer he speaks, his heart fluttering.
Luke chuckles nervously on the other end. "Really?"
Calum suddenly becomes shy. "Well if everyone's okay with it, and my family won't know, let alone care. I'm the only one here, anyway. I can't drive but I can get to the airport. I'll find a way. When is it?"
"Um, let me check... 7:10pm on Saturday."
Calum gasps slightly. That's in three days. He glances around his small room- basically a closet- and sees how easy it'll be to pack the things he needs. He barely owns anything, just a few pairs of clothes and some other valuables.
Luke and Calum talk about the details of the flight for the next few minutes, then talking about what the plans are for when he'll get there.
A few hours later, it's midnight and Calum finds his eyelids growing heavier. He lets out a yawn and Luke coos at the noise. Calum chuckles.
"Are you tired, babe?" Luke asks his boyfriend, and Calum nods, giggling when he realizes Luke can't see him.
"Yes, Lukey. I'm tired. Thank you."
"Of course, darling. I'll talk to you soon. Goodnight, love."
"Goodnight, Lukey."
Before Luke can hang up, however, Calum asks shyly, "C-can you sing me a song? Please?"
Luke gives in immediately, thinking about Calum's puppy dog eyes that he is surely using right now. "Sure, Cal."
Calum cheers silently.
He clears his voice, and starts to sing.
"Somewhere, over the rainbow,
way, up high, and the dreams that you dream of
once in a lullaby, somewhere over the rainbow,
blue birds flyand the dreams that you dream of
dreams really do come truesomeday i wish upon a star
wake up where the clouds are far behind...mewhere troubles melt like lemon drops
high above the chimney topsthat's where,
you'll find mesomewhere over the rainbow..."

I feel like that was very cliche... Oh well, hope you enjoyed it.
