-Calum whines, rubbing at his eyes as the sirens go off yet again. It's the third time that night, signaling a drill to test the sirens. Why they decided to start it at 2:00am is beyond Calum's limit of understanding.
He throws the covers off of himself, getting up, his eyes burning at the lack of sleep. He decides he's hungry, but being too lazy to make anything, he just grabs a banana. He leans against the kitchen counter, slowly peeling and eating and staring blankly into space.
"Can't sleep either?" A deep husky voice asks from beside Calum.
The boy lets out a muffled scream, still with half the banana shoved in his mouth, spinning around in the direction of the noise.
He almost faints when he doesn't see anyone there, but is jolted into an almost-heart attack when he feels a tap on his shoulder.
Calum spins around again and his eyes don't even need to focus for him to realize it's Ashton.
"Christ, Ash! You scared me half to death!" Calum yells, throwing his hand over his heart.
Ashton chuckles, moving to open a cupboard next to Calum. The kiwi boy can't figure out why his voice sounds so deep, which is why he didn't recognize it before.
His questions are answered when Ashton begins to double over in a coughing fit, pounding repeatedly on his chest with his fist.
Calum moves to pat Ashton on the back, and when the older boy is finished coughing, he gives the younger boy a sheepish smile and mutters a raspy, "Thanks."
Calum only nods, concern written in his expression for Ashton. "How can I help?" He asks, trying to look him in the eye while the boy reaches back into the cupboard.
Again Ashton chuckles, waving Calum off, saying, "S'nothing," yet contradicts himself when he begins another coughing fit.
Calum shakes his head and leads the boy into their living room and lays him down on the couch, fluffing up the pillow behind his head and throwing a blanket over him.
He tucks Ashton in, making sure he's comfy. "Cal-" the boy starts. but Calum shuts him up and tells him he'll go make some soup for the boy.
Usually it would be the other way around, Ashton taking care of the other boys since he's the "dad" of the band, but Calum is excited to finally take care of him all by himself.
The raven-haired boy chooses a can of chicken noodle soup - a classic - and prepares it easily.
Calum can hear him coughing still, and he realizes that they have the day off tomorrow to give him some time to recover. He squeals when the timer beeps, making him jump a little.
He brings out the bowl to the sick boy on the couch, sitting down next to Ash's side as he sits up to eat.
"Thanks, Cal," he says, reaching to take the bowl into his own hands.
Calum tsks, telling him to sit back. Cautiously, Ashton does, and laughs quietly when Cal scoops up some soup and brings it to the boy's mouth while playfully making airplane noises.
Ashton rolls his eyes, but takes the food gratefully anyway.
When they're finished, Calum sets the bowl on the coffee table and moves to lie down next to Ashton.
He settles in with his back pressed against the couch, his chest on Ashton's side, and his arm and head on the older boy's chest. Ash wraps his arms around Cal, holding onto him firmly and some-what tensely.
The doe-eyed boy presses a kiss to Ashton's chest, rubbing soothing circles on his belly. He visibly relaxes into Calum, both drifting into a peaceful sleep.
However, that only lasts for 5 seconds before, of course, a piercing siren fills the air.
Calum immediately jumps up, looking around with wide eyes, his heart racing.
Ashton groans, rubbing his hands over his face and letting them rest there.
When the startled boy realizes it's just the sirens again, he lets his eyes droop as he feels the fatigue really setting in. He throws his head in his hands, his eyes prickling with tears at how frustrated he is at the lack of sleep.
He only lets two or three fall in the safety of his hands, pretending to run his hands over his face like Ashton had to wipe away the tears.
"Hey," he hears a soft voice hinted with a smile, and turns to Ash to smile slightly back at him.
Calum decides to lighten up the mood by jumping suddenly on top of the other boy and tickling his sides.
He watches in awe, laughing, at Ashton's scrunched-up face and his adorable laugh leave his lips.
In the boy's trance, Ash flips them over and now the roles are reversed. In a minute it seems they've grown almost quiet- save the soft giggles from Calum- and Ashton just smiles at the boy beneath him.
Their eyes are locked and the atmosphere grows with more intensity; it's hard to breathe for both of them as Ash's eyes flicker to Calum's lips and starts to lean in.
Soon, their lips are just barely touching, and Calum can't stand it anymore so he wraps his hand behind the boy's neck and collides himself to Ashton.
It's sloppy yet passionate, all pent-up feelings finally being let out and truly discovered.
It's a whole new feeling and neither of them can seem to get enough.
And they truly can't. It dawns on Calum that they've waited this long and now they've got to make up for lost time.
It's not enough and Calum loves it. Loves the feeling he's recieving, the love that makes his heart melt, the everything that Ashton has to offer.
When they pull apart a few minutes later, Calum sighs shakily, resting his forehead against Ashton's, keeping his arms around the other's neck.
He stays there, just breathing, just letting Ashton hover over him. Calum can't let him go, too afraid this is a dream or that they won't ever have this chance again.
He takes a risk and opens his eyes slowly, feeling his eyes tear up again- stupid hormones- at Ashton just grinning at him. Calum can't take it anymore and pulls the curly-haired boy down so their bodies are as close as together as they can be at this moment.
He buries his face in Ash's neck, squeezing his eyes shut as the first few tears fall. Calum doesn't understand why he's crying right now, more like he won't admit it, but he's just never felt this many emotions for someone before and it's all so new and confusing.
All they do is listen to each other's breaths slow down.
It's about 10 minutes before Ashton situates himself so Calum is cuddled into his side once again.
He faces Ashton, kissing him softly once more before holding his cheek softly and whispering, "I really like you, Ash."
Ashton smiles gently and whispers back, "I really like you, too, Calum."
