Blake's pov
"I've never moved to another country" Calum boldly stated, looking right at me. My jaw dropped, surprised that he was still targeting me.
"Cal!" I laughed, and grabbed a drink from beside me. I couldn't help but notice that Ashton reached for the same glass I did, taking me by surprise. "You've lived in another country?" I asked quite curiously. He nodded his head and down the liquid before answering.
"I actually lived in America for a while," he stated as if it wasn't a big deal. "New York actually" he continued, "I was born there, but I moved here when I was six" he said casually.
"Where did you live?" I asked curiously.
"In the city" he answered, "South of Houston" he added.
"I'm from SoHo too" I perked up, becoming more and more interested as it continued. "What made you move back here?" I asked, genuinely interested in the conversation. Never would I have thought that after moving to a new country, I would meet someone who came from the same area I did.
He looked hesitant to answer the question, which instantly made me regret asking it. "My erm, dad died," he said, trying to act like it didn't bother him. "so I had to live with my grandmother back here"
"Oh," I breathed, swallowing hard at the sudden turn in conversation. "I'm sorry to hear that" I mumbled quietly, as I began playing with my hands in my lap. There was so many questions I wished I knew the answers to, but Ashton and I weren't close enough for me to ask. Plus, now certainly wasn't a good time to ask them.
To fill the silence, someone's phone began ringing. Michael reached back to grab it from his bag. "Oh Blake it's yours" he commented. It only hit me then that I had never retrieved my phone from when Calum, being his idiotic self, drove off when I was only half in the car.
"Who is it?" I asked somewhat curiously. Since I moved, nobody really calls or texts me because of the time zone change along with the phone bill. Every once in a while I've heard from Matt, but it's only been about a month.
"It's your mom" he replied, getting ready to toss me the phone. I felt my stomach churn, resurfacing past anger at the memories that were attached to simply hearing the word mom.
"Just leave it" I spoke, tracing mindless patterns through the sand, trying to pretend that ignoring a call from my mother wasn't a big deal. As expected, when I picked my head up, I caught Calum flashing a questioning glance in Ashton's direction. I could feel Luke's gaze on me, while Michael chose to nod and toss the phone back in the blanket.
I recall briefly telling Michael only about how my parents were divorced and even though it wasn't entirely true, I'm sure he suspected that my family situation wasn't the best, so I appreciated him acting like this was normal.
"Still mad at mommy for kicking you out?" Calum laughed, trying to lighten the mood. I watched as Michael slapped him upside the head and the other two flashed him wtf looks.
"If only" I mumbled to myself, quietly so it was only audible to my ears. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Luke dart his eyes in my direction for a brief moment that went unnoticed by the others.
