Damien sulked down the hall of Redview High and just before he turned into Homeroom; he paused to scope out the desks. Everyone had already piled in and to his dismay , the only empty seat was right smack in the middle of Fat Charlie and Kathryn herself. The year was already not heading off in the right direction. He silently begged that he had the wrong room but when he eyed the number on the door, it was evident that he was out of luck. Damien sighed and decided to make the best of it. He adjusted his shades and walked with purpose towards the empty seat. Kathryn paid no attention to him and hardly noticed that he had sat down next to her. Instead, she flipped through a fashion magazine after pulling out the apple she put in her bag. She bit into the apple knowing full well that someone was watching her.

"Since when do you read magazines," Damien scoffed.

Not bothering to look up, Kathryn replied, "Since when did I have to answer to you?"

"Well, did you have a good summer?"

"What are you getting at Damien," Kat rolled her eyes in annoyance, "You're distracting me."

"Hey, I'm just making small talk."

"Yeah? Because you're terrible at it."

"C'mon Kat," He groaned in complaint, "It's been what five or six months? Can't we be friends and talk like mature adults?"

Just as the bell rang, Kat looked up at him for the first time since he sat down and said, "Sure, just as soon as you become one."

"Okay class, as you know I'm Mr. Milton and I don't care what you do just as long as it's not illegal and it won't get me fired. . ."

The day carried on with a tendency to be purely dull. The first day of school always seemed to be boring because teachers were just getting into the routine of things and didn't feel the need to assign work right away. Kat had her next two classes with Shelby but they didn't have the chance to sit next to each other because of trouble with teachers and seating charts. All in all, magazines were kathryn's best friend for the day. Ever since her vacation, fashion and models were a rising interest. She desired to look just like them. Damien, on the other hand, had nothing to entertain himself with. He was stuck being distracted by Kat's new appearance and by how his teachers always seemed to pronounce his name wrong.

When it came time for lunch, Kathryn, Shelby , and Oliver sat at their usual table before freshman took it over. Kat had brought a huge lunch for her to entertain herself with. She brought a small bag of limon chips and leftover mushroom and pepperoni pizza along with a diet coke. One thing about her that surely hadn't change was her appetite and love for food. Shelby didn't eat much and so sometimes Kat would feed off of her like a leech.

Now on the other side of the cafeteria were the gamblers along with Damien's girl of the week. All of Damien's friends were basking in the fact that Kathryn was showing off her body more. They were talking like dogs after a piece of meat but Damien stayed quiet until Ashton tried to urge him into the conversation. "Damien, who do you think she'd go for? Dylan or Andre?"

"Neither," He responded smugly hoping no one would notice his clenched fist. "She ain't one for idiots."

Ashton, quick on his feet, came up with a witty comeback, "Then why'd she go out with you?"

The girl of the week clutched onto his arm and fought in his defense, "Because Damien is not only good looking but he's an intellectual."

Ashton mocked them by replying, "Oh, forgive me. I had no idea that he was such an intellectual." He spoke mocking her voice but with his words mocked Damien.

"Sadie," He squirmed out of her grasp, "It's time for you to go."

"What," Her slow, high pitched voice responded, "What are you saying?"

Damie, frustrated with the idiocracy, said, "I'm saying it's time for you to leave."

"All right," She stood up, "But call me later, ok?" He never responded to her and she just walked away not knowing that it was his way of dumping her. She was a complete airhead and so it was only natural that the boys would get on him for dating her.

"She's so dumb," Ashton began, "I mean what did you talk about?"

Andre dropped his two cents in by saying, "Who says they talked? Probably had no time to talk while he's doing her."

"Oh shut up," Damien shook his head. Over the past six months he grew a little more mature. He grew out of his friends and grew out of non chalant coversations about having sex with girls.

"Man," Ashton shoted exasperated, "You used to be a lot more fun, buzz kill! What happened to you?"

Behind his shades, he rolled his eyes and flipped over his tray of food before skipping out on them. He wasn't in the mood to listen to them "fangirl" over Kathryn. It was bad enough the guilt was riding him but having them talk about her like she was his past, was like having it embroidered in his memory forever. If it wasn't for the look on her face, the moment she found out, she would've been just like any other girl. But that look changed him and he had yet to learn whether it was a good change or a bad change. All he wanted was to get the hell away from here. So on his way out, he drew attention to himself especially when he passed by Kat's table.

Shelby looked up, "Looks like Damien's having trouble in paradise."

Oliver rolled his eyes, "Are people still talking about that? Kat you aren't going to get over the kid if people are still talking about it." He was like Kat's big brother just as well as Shelby. He protected them like they were the only ones he had left.

"I'm not the one that keeps brining him up," Kat reminded and then informed, "And I honestly could care less about it. I'm over it."

Shelby responded in disbelief, "But you guys had this epic romance!"

"Epic," Oliver shook his head annoyed. "The guy gambled on her and although she knew about the entire bet, she amused him and stupidly fell for him. He used her for his own reputation, that sick bastard."

"Okay enough," Kat brought the conversation to a halt. "I was stupid! Can we get passed that already? Stop holding it against me."

"I'm just saying," Oliver shot back but more towards Shelby, "It wasn't such an epic romance or even much of a romance. It was a sick, twisted idea that poor excuse of a human came up with. If she says she is over it, I believe her."

"Well I am," Kathryn shouted to try and get it through their thick skull. To intensify the scene, she stood up and stalked away angry.

"Look what you did," Shelby slapped him. "Look what you did!"

"What," Oliver attempted to shield himself from his angry twin. "I'm just saying."

"You are such a guy!" She groaned before chasing after Kathryn. She caught up with her just as she exited the cafeteria. "Wait Katy, I'm sorry for my brother. He's an idiot. A truly, amazing idiot. But he means well, you know?"

"No, it's fine," Kat replied still walking away with her best friend in tow, "I'm just frustrated that no one is listening to me. I'm over last year and if people would stop bringing it up, I could prove it to you. I, honestly, don't care." But even Kat knew that was the biggest lie of the day.
