Tutoring Julia was probably the hardest thing she ever had to do but when she was being paid twenty dollars an hour, Kathryn could care less about the difficulty. She’d been doing it for weeks with Damien’s careful supervision. One day, however, he just grabs a soda and walks away leaving her with a lingering stare in which her thoughts consist of how different he is with his sister. Sometimes he can be the headstrong father figure and other times he’ the immature big brother. Julia catches her stare and comments, “You know if you wanted my brother, you don’t have to use tutoring me as an excuse.”
Kat quickly repels the comment, “Your brother came to me because he said you needed help in English in order to graduate.”
“Oh,” She rolled her eyes, “He uses my academically challenged needs in order for him to date you. Well, let me just say that if you do like my brother and you end up dating him eventually; just don’t hurt him. After our parent’s divorce, he was all I had and I hate seeing him hurt. So if you like him –“
“I can assure you,” Kathryn looked her straight in the eyes, “I don’t, okay?” Julia nodded her head and realizing that the girl was only thirteen, Kat decided not to go on and tell her that her brother was the one hurting people. Julia might have known already but she didn’t want to risk ruining the kid’s idolization of her brother.
“Then don’t lead him on.”
Kat decided to ignore her and say, “Back to Hawthorne.”

Kathryn couldn’t help but notice when Dylan sat down behind her in English. She couldn’t help but notice how he didn’t even acknowledge her. She couldn’t help but notice how cute he looked in his old navy clothes. He sported regular shorts and a colored tank top that revealed large biceps. She couldn’t help but notice the blush on her cheeks or the knots in her stomach the moment she looked at him.
When Ms. Free was in between literature and grammar, Kathryn stirred up the courage to turn around and talk to him. He glanced up reluctantly when she started to speak, “Look, I’m sorry but you have to understand that because you are friends with Damien you’re going to be subjected to my prejudice. You may be sweet but I’ve been fooled once and I’m not looking forward to a second time.”
He scoffed, “The fact that you think I’m capable of such cruelty just shows how much you don’t know or understand my relationship with the guys.”
She frowned, “Ever heard of the saying ‘fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me’?”
“I can understand that your guard is up,” he shrugged crossing his arms, “But don’t compare me to Damien.”
“I won’t,” She hesitated, “So, friends?”
After thinking over it for a moment, he smiled, “Or if I stop being friends with Damien, would you go out with me?” It was obvious that he was joking when a chuckle followed the ridiculous question.
She laughed, “Dylan!”
“Okay,” the man surrendered easily, “But there’s a part on Friday and none of my friends are going. Do you want to hang out? Just as friends?”
“I don’t know,” Kat frowned.
“Come on,” He coaxed, “What’s the fun in being friends if we never hang out?”
Biting her lip, she slowly nodded her head, “Okay, but just as friends. No date!”
