Her dad had practically begged her to go to Fresh & Easy to pick up some pink lemonade and when she finally gave in it had started raining. Although she loved the rain, driving in it was a completely different story. The rain hindered her from taking control of the car like she usually can. Thankfully, the rain was light and she made it around the corner without any sudden skidding.

Unbeknownst to her, Damien works at Fresh and Easy and on that particular night he’d been working over time. When she saw him at the cash register, she quickly put on a pair of bug-eyed sunglasses that covered half her face. She kept her head down as she grabbed some Lemonade and she got orange juice for herself. Damien had been a nonstop, consistent nag since the first week of school. It started off just asking her to tutor his sister and into asking her out. No matter how much she turned him down, he kept coming on to her. Even Kathryn knew it was because he didn’t want to lose the bet but she had to admit that the attention, although very annoying, was quite endearing.

It took a few minutes for her to get to the registers but unfortunately there was only one aisle open. She awkwardly set her items on the conveyor belt and Damien scanned the items quickly while looking at her with a strange expression plastered on his face. “$13.94,” He read the register monitor. Kathryn counted out exact change and then handed it to her causing him to laugh when he saw a twenty dollar bill fall out of her wallet. She ignored his laughter because he immediately followed it with a question, “Paper or plastic?”

“Plastic, please,” She changed her voice slightly.

He gently placed the juices in the bag and then handed it to her, “Have a nice night, Kat.” She gaped at him not taking the bag when he handed it to her with a smirk, “What? Just because you put on sunglasses half the size of your voice doesn’t mean you’re the master of disguise.”

“You knew the whole time?”

“From the moment you walked in,” The smirk practically lived on his face.

“And you chose to make look like an idiot?”

“No,” He shrugged, “You chose to look like an idiot. I just let you look like an idiot.”

She grabbed her bag viciously, “Whatever!” She stomped out of the store practically throwing a temper tantrum causing Damien to shake his head completely amused. As soon as she walked out, she was met with the rain pounding on concrete. Annoyed, she ran straight to her car and locked herself in there. The sound of rain pounding on her windshield caused her to shake and realize that she wasn’t going to be able to see very well driving home. Just as she was about to start the car, light flashed through the windshield for a second and following was the terrible sound of thunder. The decibles must have been so high that it shook the car.

About thirty minutes to an hour passed and she was still frozen in the driver’s seat. The sunglasses she had on were somewhere on the floor broken from being thrown from her face after hearing the thunder. Too frightened to even start the car, Kathryn was stuck in the parking lot unable to go home. She contemplated doing many things in this situation. She thought about calling her dad but she didn’t want to seem so dependent on him like she couldn’t be on her own in a simple thunderstorm. Secondly, she thought about going back into Fresh And Easy but that wouldn’t go over very well for so many reasons. Someone tapping on the passenger side window caused her to jump and pull out of her thoughts.

Looking over, she could easily distinguish a soaking wet Damien and she almost didn’t unlock the car but realizing that he could get seriously ill she did. He opened the door and closed it quickly as he got in. He shook his hair much like a shaggy dog after jumping into the pool, “What are you still doing  here?”
