After placing a few unneeded folders in my locker and composing myself, I walked in the classroom History 2 and looked around. I tried to look for a seat and to my surprise tables were bunched together in lines facing the front. I saw Poppy and her friends in the corner of the back row, giggling and flicking their hair, a row or guys all bellowing at some joke one of them made, and a row at the front which had a few people talking and one girl reading...with the only empty seat next to her. Classic, stereotypical classroom of students, just like back home...or well, back in the US.

No one really paid any attention to me as I entered the classroom and made my way over to the empty seat - much to my satisfaction. I really didn't want to be labelled as the new girl.

As I approached the chair I wondered if the girl would be alright with me sitting there, or if she already had a friend next to her who just happened to be running late. In that case, I'd have nowhere to sit and the idea of that made me nervous. As I stood awkwardly by the table wondering if I should ask the girl if the seat was free or not, she looked up from her book and smiled at me. I smiled back, relaxing slightly.

"Hey," she began, and I could already tell she was a sweet girl. "Are you new? I mean, it's not like I know many people but I've never seen you around."

"No, I am new," I replied, and I saw her eyes widen ever so slightly as I spoke. It'll be the accent, I'm telling you now. "I just moved here from Florida."

"Wow, that's far away," she said as she placed the bookmark in her book and closed it, placing it carefully on the table in front of her.

"Oh, uh, is this seat free?" I asked, gesturing to it. "There's kinda nowhere else for me to go if it's not though." I gave a nervous laugh.

"Oh, of course, it's always free." The girl quickly glanced around at her peers as I sat down and placed my bag on the floor. She turned back to face me, smiling. "I'm Emily, what's your name?"

"Caitlyn," I beamed. "Caitlyn Swift."

"Nice to meet you, Caitlyn," she turned to face the front of the classroom as the teacher walked in. She lent over quickly and added, "if you need any help with anything, come find me. We might have some classes together."

The teacher sat at his desk and turned on his computer. He began taking attendance, with the students replying "yes sir", and when he got to my name, I could sense the silence as the rest of the class began wondering who the hell Caitlyn was.

"Yes, sir," I said, although more mumbled. I could slightly see some of my classmates out the corner of my eye, who had now turned to look at me.

"Mate, we got an American!" One of the guys in the row behind me announced, and they laughed. At me? At my accent? I felt a little embarrassed at the attention, but I wasn't too surprised as I'd already guessed people would double take when they first heard me speak.

"Josh, quiet down, Caitlyn is a new student from America, not some endangered species." The teacher scolded the boy - whose name I guessed was Josh - before giving me a somewhat sympathetic smile.

"Hi, Caitlyn," the teacher turned in his chair to face me. "I'm Mr Barker, your form tutor. If you ever need anything come to me about it." He smiled before turning back to his computer, as the classroom began to fill with chatter again.

I turned to Emily, but she'd already picked up her book again and was reading it. I took a peek at the other people in the room, but they were all absorbed in each others' conversations that I just turned back in my chair and began studying my timetable. I had Maths first, in Maths 5. I had no idea where that was.

"Hey, Emily," I asked quietly, not really wanting to disrupt her reading her book. She bookmarked the page and turned to me with a kind smile on her face.

"Yeah, Caitlyn?"

"I have maths first in Maths 5 but I have no idea where that is...could you help?"

"Of course! I have maths first too!"

I relaxed at this, knowing at least I'll be on time for my first lesson. Emily took her timetable out of her planner so we could compare, and I relaxed again. At least I had sort of made a friend already and luckily enough that friend had a similar timetable to me.

Soon a bell rang and everyone got off their chairs and began shuffling out the door and into the hallway. All the other form groups did the same thing and I found myself almost fighting through the crowds as I followed Emily up the stairs and along a corridor.

We stopped outside a classroom labelled Maths 5 and stood against the wall so other students could still pass down the hallway. A few more students also lined up against the wall, a few I recognised from form time - two being that Josh kid and a friend of his.

The crowds died down pretty quickly and soon after a middle aged woman with a ponytail and glasses stepped outside the classroom and held the door open for us. She stepped in after us all and made her way over to her desk.

"Good morning, class, hope you all had a good summer break, she spoke with a slightly nasally voice. "For those of you who don't know me, I'm Mrs. Burns and I'll be teaching you for your GCSE exams. I have all your previous records and work, but I've been told I have a new student. Now, which one of you is Caitlyn?"

I slowly raised my hand as I felt everyone's eyes shift to me. So much for trying to avoid the whole 'new girl' stereotype - I would've preferred people to think I've been here as long as them and that they'd just never noticed me. Not so easy with my accent, however.

"Ah, Caitlyn, welcome," she beamed at me as she approached me. "I've got a few things to give you," she said, as she began passing me things. "An exercise book, a textbook and a calculator."

She turned back to the front of the classroom as I turned to where Emily was, who'd luckily saved me a seat next to her. I placed my resources on the table and my bag on the floor, after retrieving my pencil case.

Class soon began and although it was school, I hoped I'd enjoy it at least a little bit.
