Somehow through the music, people talking and laughing, I heard a knock at the door. Like a party hosts' instinct. I rushed over to find James and his two kids standing at the door. "Oh, hi!" I didn't even realize we had invited him.
"Hey.. Kids go ahead," The two little ones rushed in as he stepped in, "Sorry we're late." He laughed. His salt and pepper hair was slicked back while he wore khakis and a checkered blue button up. He looked good, very good.
"Oh, you're fine, thanks for coming." I was trying my best to made sure he couldn't read my surprised expression. I walked him in, grabbing him a drink while we did the mandatory awkward small talk.
"So big day tomorrow?" He asked sipping on his cocktail.
"Yes! Weather looks really good. Will you be coming?" I asked. He assured me four months ago when I had no one that he would be there.
"Oh, no no. I won't impose. I have work to do, and you have Ryan's whole family." My heart noticeably sank but before I could ask one more time, Ryan popped up. I excused myself to let them catch up and tried my best to mingle and entertain and not focus that the person I wanted the most at my graduation would not be there.
