Man, the manga was better than the anime, as it commonly is.
Here's a short summary of the plot:
Tohru Honda's mother and father both died, and instead of "bothering" others she lived in a tent until several guys from the Sohma family found her and let her stay in their home if she cooked and cleaned, because they're freaking slobs.
Tohru accidentally discovers that members of the Sohma family are cursed and posessed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiacs. Whenever they are hugged by someone of the opposite gender, unless they are both zobiac members, turn into their animal for a while, and it's freaking hilarious.
Turns out that everyone who Tohru was living with was a member of the zodiac (the dog, rat, and cat, even though the cat isn't technically a zodiac member).
In the manga it introduces each zodiac member, unlike in the anime. The manga had things happen in a different order, and has more things happen.
There was a huge plot twist near the end that I totally called. I felt amazing.
The story has some definate romance to it, and for the first while it seems happy-go-lucky, then things take a dark turn towards the end.
I don't want to spoil anything so I'm trying not to go into to much detail.
All in all I'd give this manga a 4.2/5. I enjoyed it. It was a bit weird, but most anime are weird. I say give it a chance.
For the record, every one of my ships became canon(cannon? Whatever I give up) in the manga.
