Chapter 10- The Moment I Knew

Yes, though, he's not my patient anymore, but I still kept a close contact with his parents,”

What's his name?”

Niall. His name is Niall Malik,”

“N-Niall,.........Malik?” Liam repeated the all too familiar name of Joel's babysitter, his Advanced Mathematics classmate, and the person he treated like shit. If the amount of guilt in his heart used to be just a small drop, now it had turned into a full tsunami tide of guilt.

Ever since Liam found out that Joel was autistic, he felt absolutely hopeless and devastated. He could still remember that day crystal clear. A fourteen year old Liam Payne got home after his basketball tryout. Sweaty, tired but happy, he unlocks the front door of his house and immediately search for his personally three-year old ball of sunshine, Joel Payne. Three year old Joel loves to watch his big brother playing basketball, and extremely thrilled when Liam lets him play with him. Liam expects to see his brother and father in the living room playing whilst his mother was at work. But to as God destined, the only sight he saw was his three year old brother laying on the bottom of the floor, having a seizure with blood and spit flowing out of his small mouth. To add horror to the scene, his father was standing on the top of the stair case, holding a bottle of vodka.

The next he knew, he was running through the automatic sliding door of the hospital, with Joel in his arms and Louis running right behind him. He screamed and yelled for people to help him, to help his beloved brother. It was like slow motion, as the nurses yelled at each other, taking his brother from his hand and Louis answering the questions thrown by the nurses since he was practically muted. He cried, sobbed, yelled, screamed and cursed as Louis tried to clam his best friend down. When Liam did finally calm down, he fell asleep on Louis' lap. When he woke up, the first sight he saw was a man in white robe telling his his mother something. She was crying but she kept muttering thank you to the doctor. Liam took it as a good sign, and immediately asked to see his brother. They led the clueless boy and the restless mother to one of the ward for toddlers to see the unconscious boy. Liam cried silently beside Joel, as his mother ponder whether to break the news now, or later. Opting for the latter, she moved to sit beside his son and wraps her arm around the shoulder of her eldest son. Taking a deep breath, she whispered into Liam's ears. When she finished, Liam slowly turned to face his mother as big fat tears rolled down his cheeks. Anger, confusion, sadness and pure hatred portrayed in his son what used to be caring bright brown eyes. Letting the anger flowing through his veins, Liam began trashing and screaming in the small ward. She was stunned to see this side of his son; Liam was never violent before. In that moment, she knew that everything has changed.

As predicted, Liam changed the day he knew that his brother was autistic and his father had purposely pushed the small innocent boy down a flight of stairs like a rag doll, causing the boy to suffer fits of seizure and a small concussion. Luckily, they never had to face his father again after that, but that didn't stop Liam from holding a grudge against that disgusting man. From that day forward, the new Liam is constantly angry, rebellious, and distant. The only person that could bring down his wall is Joel, the small autistic boy. He promised himself that he would never let anyone hurt his little brother ever again, and he would love that boy like the father he deserves.
