Peter Max - Three Faces HC 1979
We are all of us three people sharing life within one skin,
a triplet set of constructs, which our persona underpin.
The pious face professing needed discipline,
the archive of our sin, and the mediating realist to keep those two within.
The former monitors our judgement,
the one that criticizes and moralizes... the one that cares.
The next our mischievous thoughts and deeds,
hiding the face our impulse wears.
It's when they meet; come face to face,
pitting estimations and bracing morals;
we see the composite persona
and why the id with superego quarrels.
One must not suppress the other,
but find that equilibrium for support.
Hence the ego mediates between
them, and the impulses they purport.
We need that check and balance
as we move ahead apace,
offering to the world
our carefully chosen face.
And if perchance we falter,
through conflict with our psyche's trio,
then we'll just barge straight ahead,
emitting blatant brio!
