The Icon Ambiguity

There's a mystery afoot

in seeing folks I thought I knew

that has totally left me baffled

to find they've changed to someone new

Have they each done something wrong

are they running from the law

or is there a reason much less sinister

like concealing some invented flaw

I click to a familiar site these imposters share

those following/followers and they are there

but now usurped by someone new

a western façade with masks anew

What deception is in practice

Is it me alone they tantalize

when each day they substitute

a new identity to fantasize

nothing else has changed

and a reason I can't find

for that distinctive tiny sphere

being suddenly redesigned

Am I wrong or am I right

Is it simply pleasure seeking

or an evolution of the ego

dominating id's wishful thinking

Perhaps to thwart this anomaly

I should assume my own disguise

and move among these pages

leaving all of them less wise

the idea is appealing

I'll commence tomorrow morn

through these sites I would be stealing

a secret masquerader popping up like Orville's corn
