An e-mail arrived the other day
And I read with sadness what it had to say
Another friend from years gone, passed
Her husband and I remain the last
I found his number and made the call
He barely remembered me at all
And old memories we couldn't share
His days now ending in a home of care
Twelve people, for fifty years close friends
Now two, awaiting what portends
There's nothing left to say at all
A last goodbye, I end the call
Nobody left to commiserate
A few old photos to contemplate
But I'm not marking any date
Sorry fate, you'll have to wait
