“Payne! Open the damn door!” a voice roared, the sound making me jolt awake, a whimper escaping my lips. Gently but firmly, Liam’s hand rested over my mouth keeping me quiet.
“I need you to go hide in the closet, alright? Don’t come out until I come and get you,” he whispered, letting me go and helping me stand, the banging suddenly growing louder.
‘Go,’ he mouthed, opening the door. I dove into the closet, pushing myself into the very back and curling into a ball. He gave me a reassuring nod and shut it, his footsteps resounding through the room. The sound of a lock being undone soon followed before there was a loud bang and a grunt.
“What the hell, Ricky?” Liam spat, his voice winded.
“You missed the match last night,” the man yelled, a slight accent coating his words, almost similar to Liam’s but not as prevalent. “You cost me a freakin’ three grand, Payne! THREE GRAND!” There was another loud thud and I had to clamp a hand over the bottom half of my face, knowing what it was. I had heard that sound many times before; I had been on the receiving end of that sound. Unknowingly, tears dripped down my cheeks, my heart pounding so loudly that I was terrified he would find me from the sound alone.
“You-THUD-ever-THUD-back out-THUD-again-THUD-you know-THUD-what will happen-CRASH!” the man screamed, a horrified squeak escaping my mouth. Everything seemed to freeze. My eyes grew to the size of saucers, Liam’s breathing catching.
“What was that?” Ricky hissed, storming towards the closet. The door was wrenched open, and in one quick movement, my hair was grabbed and I was dragged out, my lips sealed firmly shut to seal any cries in. Through blurry vision, I caught sight of Liam on the floor, his arm wrapped around his torso and lip bloody. He looked to be in pain, but the second that he saw me, he pushed himself to his feet, his face contorted in fury.
“Let her go,” he growled.
“Was this why you bailed on me?!” the man roared, yanking me from side to side by my hair. “You were screwing this little slut!”
“I said to let. Her. Go.” Liam repeated, shoulders heaving with the force of his angered breaths.
“You have one more chance, Payne,” Ricky said evenly. “You screw up again and you’ll regret it.” My hair was let go and I slumped to the ground as that monster walked out, shutting the door behind him. Almost immediately Liam was by my side, his visage coated in pain and regret.
“This shouldn’t have happened,” he breathed, reaching out to cup my chin. “I am so sorry, Brin.”
“It’s fine, Liam. I’ve had worse,” I smiled shakily, trying to keep my need to cry down. I was terrified, I was in shock, and my head was pounding something awful.
“Does anything hurt?” he asked softly, watching carefully to gauge my reaction.
“I-I’m okay-“
“I didn’t ask if you were okay,” he said evenly. “I asked if anything hurt at all.” At that I hesitated, not wanting to be such a cry baby about the pain but then again, the throbbing was awful.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” Liam sighed, his arms slipping under my body to pick me up. He swiftly carried me over to the couch and set me there, his face masked in regret. “Is it your neck? Your head?” I looked away.
“Ah, your head…I’ll be back in a second, love.” I nearly dozed as he disappeared into the kitchen, but mere moments later he came back with supplies in hand. He dropped to a kneeling position beside the couch and handed me a water bottle and some painkillers, having me down them before he placed a plush pillow under my head, ushering me to lie back.
“This’ll be a bit cold,” he mumbled suddenly, his hands slowly letting a chilled rag rest against my forehead, the temperature making me shiver, but pain immediately numbing. My eyelids strangely became heavy, panic swelling in me as I struggled to stay awake.
“Wha-what did you do?” I squeaked, eyes wide for a mere second before they began to droop again. Liam flipped over the rag to the more chilled side and pressed it to my skin, his other hand skimming up and down my cheek.
“Just relax, it’s only a little bit of a sleeping pill,” he cooed, offering a reassuring smile. “It’s perfectly safe, but this way when you wake up, the meds will have kicked in and you’ll be fine. You wouldn’t have been able to sleep otherwise; you just woke up.”
“I don’t wa-ant to sle-ep,” I slurred, grabbing onto his wrist as tight as I could, which in reality wasn’t very tight. He removed it, instead taking it into his grip, squeezing it slightly.
“It’s for the best, trust me. You’d have a pretty nasty headache otherwise. I’ve seen this happen to some of my girls…”
His girls?
