I had always heard of the outside world; the vibrant blue sky, the thick green grass, and the organized forces that had the land under siege. Since I was a little girl, my parents had told me stories of how earth used to be when they were children. Life was easy, families were happy, and each country had their own government – such an odd concept, really.

Ever since I could remember, the world had been an unknown place, filled with intriguing dangers that I was sheltered from. All that came crashing down within a few seconds though. I had heard the breaking of the front door, the screams of my parents, and the booming voices of the men. There was nothing I could do really but lay shaking in my bed, huddled in a ball.

My father had told me stories of these savage officials that enforced the ways of the government. How cruel they were. How ruthless, killing without even batting an eye. I was told that if I ever came across one to cross my fingers and pray to my lucky stars that I would live. So there I lay, tears slipping down my cheeks as I tried to press myself up against the wall near my bed, my body flinching with each gunshot.

“The back rooms,” someone called, heavy footfalls nearing my door. I slid a hand over my mouth and attempted to hold in my whimpers as the entry was suddenly lit up, a tall figure’s silhouette outlined.

“We got one!” the man yelled, others soon stomping towards where we were.

“Sorry, babe. Orders are orders,” the man chuckled, raising his weapon and slipping his finger onto the trigger. I let out a small squeal, throwing my arms up in front of me as if it would help protect me from the danger. The impact never came, though. My body was rigid, my mind screaming at me to run, to do something. I slowly peeked out in front of me to see a young man standing there, a large hand resting on the barrel of the other’s weapon.

“That won’t be necessary,” he spoke gruffly, his words sounding rather oddly pronounced as he spoke.

“We were told to leave no survivors,” one of the men piped up only to be met with a steely, honey brown gaze.

“And I’m telling you to stand down,” he hissed. “She’s done nothing. Honestly, just look at her…she’s practically a child.”

“The only way they’ll let her live is if you claim her,” the one who wanted to shoot me said. “You and I both know that you don’t want to be responsible for that…trash.”

“Lay off, mate. It’s my decision,” the nice man said. “Take care of the bodies and I’m going to deal with this.” There were a bunch of ‘whatevers’ before he let out a deep sigh, slipping his gun from around his shoulder and leaning it against the wall. He stood there, frozen for a mere second before turning to look down at me.

“Stand up,” he ordered softly, his voice still rather firm though. I bit my lip and looked up to observe his handsome features, my cheeks flushing as I noticed how good looking he was. His eyes were a mesmerizing brown and hair a tousled black that was somewhat shorter on the sides. He was clad in the normal enforcer wear consisting of black pants and white tanktop, a dark tactile vest protecting his upper chest and matte dog tags hanging from his neck.

“C’mon…stand up,” he prodded one more time, his voice leaving no room for argument. I slowly uncurled from my safe position and slid out of bed, my lip quivering as I saw how he towered over my 5 foot frame.

“You’re a tiny little thing,” he mumbled, almost to himself before stepping towards me. I quickly stumbled backwards, trying to escape him but only managing to trip over my feet and land on my rear. His features softened and he took off one of his fingerless leather gloves while he crouched in front of my shaking form.

“I’m not gonna hurt ya,” he said softly, leaning down slightly so I was forced to make eye contact. “What’s your name, darling?” Darling? His speech was strangely pleasant to the ear, though his words were slightly different than my own.

“Bl-blaire,” I whispered, biting my lip. “M-my names’s B-blaire.” I looked down at my hands, ashamed of the stutter that was lacing my voice. Any stressful or emotionally straining situation I was in and suddenly my words were garbled and embarrassing.

“I’m Zayn,” he informed, his disregard of my stutter making me at least slightly more at ease. “Can you look at me, Blaire?” I couldn’t bring myself to meet his gaze so I shook my head slowly, blood landing on my tongue as my teeth’s grip on my lip became more harsh.  I flinched though when a warm hand cupped my jaw, calloused fingertips brushing my cheek. He tilted my head up so my vision was forced to align with his, my chin quivering with emotion.

“My p-parents are d-dead…a-aren’t they,” I whimpered, a tear slipping down my cheek and splashing onto his hand.

“I couldn’t save them, I’m sorry,” he said quietly, a torn look displayed on his features. “It’s taking a lot just to save you.” I sniffled and nodded the slightest bit, my face still cupped in his hand.

“Listen, I promise not to hurt you,” he breathed, his words sincere. “But…but I can’t I bring you within the boundary if you’re um, well-to put it bluntly, conscious. It’s a security threat.”

“W-What do y-you mean?” I stuttered, eyes wide as I took in his words. “W-What are y-you g-gonna do t-to me?”

“It’s really quick okay?” he reassured though his words were anything but reassuring. “And it doesn’t hurt at all. You’re just gonna fall asleep, yeah?” I tore away from his grip, limbs that had just grown still now shaking again.

“N-No!” I squeaked, tears now slipping down my cheeks at a steady pace.

“C’mere,” he said softly, trying to reach for me but my body quickly scrambling backwards till I hit the wall.

“Malik! We’ve got to go!” another man yelled outside the door.

“I only need a minute! I’ll be right out, mate,” he responded, a long breath escaping his lips. “Blaire, I’m sorry, love. We’ve got to get this over with.” I shook my head frantically but he was already knelt beside me, gently tugging my body up against his so my back was against his chest. I was thrashing wildly in his strong hold, trying to break free of the man’s touch.

“It’ll be over in a second,” he mumbled, one hand taking my wrist in hold and pressing on the side with a firm yet gentle pressure. With that, his free one quickly collided with the side of my neck, right below my ear. Just like that my eyes rolled back and my limbs went limp, a strong vice easily supporting my weight.

“I’ve got ya,” he said softly as I drifted in out of consciousness, my mind finally shutting down as I blacked out in the man’s arms, the world fading away.
