“So this has been going on for years?” he asked as I mumbled the vaguest description of my past I could give. I simply nodded as his fingers skimmed my hip, brushing over all of the past scars.
“I stopped for a while, but all of this is just too much for me right now,” I said quietly. He hugged me closer and a kiss was pressed to my temple.
“I know this is more complicated than telling you that you’re worth more than this and all that crap,” he sighed. “So I’m just going to say that I’m here for you and set down a few ground rules.”
“Ground rules?” He nodded and sat up from our previous position to look down at me.
“First, I’m gonna keep that blade of yours, alright?” he informed softly, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “Second, I want your door unlocked at all times. Including the bathroom door when you shower-“
“BUT-BUT…NO!” I cried at his second request. “That’s disgusting.”
“I won’t try anything,” he promised sincerely. “But if you cut yourself, I need to be able to get to you.” At that I sort of understood why he wanted the door unlocked, but I didn’t like it.
“And lastly, I want you to come to me,” he pleaded, now cupping my cheek. “If you feel like hurting yourself, come to me and I’ll distract you. If you do cut, come to me and I’ll take care of you, baby. Please, just talk to me. Don’t shut me out, alright? Can you do that for me?”
“I guess,” I mumbled, looking away from his sincere gaze. “But don’t you think the whole door thing is a little much-“ He stared at me pointedly, an eyebrow raised as if saying ‘really.’ I sighed and my shoulders slumped, my eyes closing in frustration.
“Fine, whatever,” I growled. “But if you try anything I swear I will-“
“I won’t,” he cut me off. “I promise you, alright?” I was about to respond when my phone beeped, signaling a text. I shoved Liam back a little so I could lean over and grab it, swiping the screen and my eyes going wide as I saw ‘UNKOWN NUMBER.’ With a shaky touch I opened the message, my whole body freezing as I read the short phrase.
‘They’re coming for you…’
“Baby?” Liam asked softly, scooting over to brush some hair away from my face.
“Brin, what’s wrong?” he tried again, becoming worried when I didn’t respond.
“Brinlee.” He said evenly, cupping my face. “Talk to me, remember? You have to talk to me, yeah?”
“I-I…” I stuttered and handed him the phone, letting his eyes scan over the screen, his caramel irises darkening with anger.
“Who sent this to you?” he hissed, taking my wrists in a vice like grip.
“I-I…”
“WHO THE HELL SENT THIS TO YOU?!” he screamed, his hold tightening. “ANSWER ME!”
“I don’t know!” I squeaked, wincing at the pain shooting up my arms. “O-ow! Li!” He seemed to snap out of it at my pleas and quickly loosened his grip, his face falling into a remorseful stare.
“I’m sorry, Brin,” he whispered, taking my wrists and pressing small kisses to the reddened skin. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.” I bit my lip and looked up at him, still slightly frightened by his actions; the text not helping matters.
“Okay, let me try this again…calmer,” he sighed. “Do you know who sent this to you, baby?”
“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “I don’t know who he is.”
“He?”
“Last night, when you found me, someone was following me. I-I don’t know who but he told me to watch myself,” I informed him.
“He talked to you?” Liam growled, his body tensing in anger. “Do you know what he looked like? How he got away?”
“I don’t know!” I cried, tears stinging my eyes in frustration. “I JUST DON’T KNOW! HE DISAPPEARED! I-I THOUGHT I WAS IMAGINING IT ANYWAY!”
“Zayn…” was all he breathed, brow furrowed. “That son of a-“
“Who’s Zayn?” I interrupted before the last word could escape his mouth.
“Zayn is one of my boss’ puppets,” he sighed, rubbing the lower half of his face. “The guy is literally a ghost. One second he’s there and the next he’s gone; it’s what he’s known for.”
“Well, why does he want me?” I asked quietly, fear pounding through my veins. “What did I do?”
“I don’t kno-“ he began when a little girl’s scream pierced the air.
“LIAM!!!!!”
