“Those feel good, babe?” Liam questioned, patting my now wrapped knuckles. I lifted my hands, clenching and unclenching them, the tight feeling of the cloth uncomfortable.
“Do I have to have them wrapped?” I asked, wanting to take the restricting material off.
“Yes you do,” he chuckled. “I don’t want any broken hands.” My eyes widened and I stared up at him, hesitant.
“You can break your hand doing this?” I squeaked.
“I’ve only had a few students do that,” he shrugged. “Just listen to what I say and you’ll be fine.” I nodded, still not liking the whole prospect of fighting. I’d seen what fighting could do…I’d experienced it. I didn’t want to have that kind of power to hurt someone.
“Alright, proper form is key,” Liam chimed in, quickly wrapping his hands also. His movements were smooth and memorized, a blush flooding my cheeks as I found myself strangely attracted to the way his muscles rippled with each motion.
“C’mere, love,” he smiled, tugging me forward so that my back was against his chest. “Feet apart.” His foot kicked mine, prodding my stance to be a bit more open. “Knees bent.” His hands slipped down to rest on my hips pushing down slightly until he was satisfied. “Weight shifted to your front foot.” He pushed me to center over my front foot before he squeezed my sides slightly. “That’s a girl…beautiful form.” I blushed and tried to memorize the position that he had moved me into, feeling slightly stiff in the new and rather odd form.
“Upper body now,” he murmured in my ear, his hands sliding up my body and down my arms to connect with my hands. “Fists up.” He pulled my now clenched hands to hover in front of my face. “Thumbs outside of your fist.” He chuckled to himself as he pried open my hands and resituated them. “Elbows close to your ribcage.” He tucked my elbows in and I fidgeted, the position becoming a whole lot more uncomfortable. The second he removed his hands I relaxed my arms a bit, letting the tight form in my elbows slip.
“Baby, they have to stay close,” he sighed, once again pushing them close to my body. “It protects your chest.”
“But I’m not fighting anyone,” I groaned. “I don’t want to fight anyone.”
“Just because you don’t want to fight doesn’t stop people from trying to hurt you,” he said seriously. “It’s my job to make sure you don’t end up raped or dead, yeah?” I looked at the ground and nodded, haphazardly holding the form he had shown me.
“You know what, put your arms down,” he growled, tugging my body harshly against his chest.
“What are you doing?” I squeaked, his hand going to rest on my torso.
“These are your ribs,” he pointed out the obvious, his fingers trailing over them. “Right where they meet, just underneath is your diaphragm.” His touch moved to ghost over the point he was speaking of, his mouth lowering to right beside my ear.
“Keep your damn elbows tight,” he rasped, his fingers lightly pressing against my skin, my knees going weak and lungs seizing. I clutched onto his bicep to keep me upright as he relieved the pressure and instead rubbed the now sore spot. Even after he stopped though I found myself tearing up at the odd breathlessness I was feeling.
“Breathe, baby,” Liam murmured. “You’re fine. It just makes you a bit short of breath.”
“What the hell did you do?” I wheezed, gradually steadying my lungs.
“Imagine being hit there, full force, by a trained boxer who knows exactly where to hit,” he said softly. “It isn’t pleasant and it will drop you in a heartbeat. If you keep your elbows tight, that spot is protected.”
“You didn’t have to do that though,” I mumbled. “You could have just told me.”
“You’re stubborn as hell, babe,” he chuckled. “You wouldn’t have listened to me.” I couldn’t argue with that and simply nodded, moving away from him and resuming the correct position.
“Atta girl…

“Hit me.”
“I’m not going to hit you, Liam.”
“C’mon, just throw a jab.”
“NO!”
“Baby…just once. I want to see what you’ve got.” I turned away and shook my head; I wasn’t going to hit anyone.
“Brinle-“
“IM NOT GOING TO HIT YOU! IM NOT GONNA HIT ANYBODY!” I screamed, whipping around to face him. He looked shocked for a mere moment before his calm mask slipped back over his features.
“Why not, love?” he asked softly, stepping forward so he was close to my trembling frame. I shook my head and stumbled back, my bottom lip quivering as the awful memories resurfaced.
“I-I won’t be like him,” I whimpered. “I WON’T, LIAM!”
“Okay, okay,” he said quickly, yanking off his gloves and pulling me into a hug. I pushed back the stinging behind my eyes and swallowed the lump in my throat, determined not to cry in front of him again.
“I-I refuse to be like him,” I mumbled. “I-I’m not going to hurt anyone.”
“Like your dad?” he asked carefully and I nodded, sniffling.
“He didn’t care about hurting people,” I mumbled, stepping away and looking down at my gloves. “I promised myself I’d never hurt anyone and I’m not.”
“Understandable,” he chose his words wisely. “But sweetheart, if someone is about to hurt you, you’re going to have to fight back.”
“No-“
“Yes,” he said firmly. “If I’m not there you have to protect yourself.”
“I won’t hit anyo-“
“If your father was to show up here,” Liam said evenly, his face emotionless. “And start beating the living hell of you-“ My breath caught as all the pain began hitting my body like a wall, fear resurfacing.
“Liam, stop-“
“Hit after hit…”
“LIAM STOP! PLEASE!”
“Until you’re barely hanging on to lif-“ my fist collided with the side of his face, his head snapping to the side feet stumbling back a bit. My mouth dropped wide open and I shook my head, shocked. Liam was smiling widely, almost proudly but as soon as he saw my expression, he tensed.
“Brinlee-“
“I’m a monster,” I squeaked, head reeling as I clumsily stumbled backwards.
“You’re not a monster, darling-“
“I-I-…” I was at a loss of what to say so I did the one thing I knew oh so well how to do,
Run…
