Blood. Blood trickling down my arm and mixing with the water leaving crimson trails as it circled the drain. A little cut wouldn’t hurt right? Just a little one to make that itching go away. But who would have thought that the blood that used to comfort me would betray me.
I stumbled out of the shower, sobbing horribly as I looked around the bath room. Small, bloody handprints were smeared against the wall, the scene all too familiar.
“Macie,” I whimpered, glancing every which way till my eyes landed on the mirror, a dark, familiar figure standing behind me. He stalked closer, lips being pressed to my ear as I sobbed harder.
“Found you,” he rasped almost demonically, the sound making the hairs of my arms rise up.
“L-LOUIS!” I screamed shrilly, my vision swimming with spots as I panicked and whipped around to come face to face with my father. His brooding, sinister features were covered in a fine splatterof blood, the alcohol on his breath as clear as it had been only a month ago.
“Bye Bye, Birdie,” he whispered, terror hitting me like a brick wall as I screamed loudly, wishing him to go away. I could vaguely hear the door burst open and gentle hands gripped the tops of my arms as I trembled violently.
“Brinlee, Brinlee look at me, luv,” Louis said gently, coaxing my head to turn and look at him. “It’s not real, it’s not real, babe. I’m right here with you, yeah? You’re safe.”
“I know who took Macie,” was all I could manage before breaking down once again, sobbing as I fell harshly to the floor.
“Who took her, Brin?”
“Sh-she can’t go through this. She’s too young…t-too innocent. It’ll tear her apart-“
“BRINLEE,” Louis said loudly, grasping the sides of my head in a firm hold so I was forced to meet his intense gaze. “Who. Took her.”
“M-My dad,” I mewled, silent tears sliding down my face. “It’s all my fault.”
“None of this makes any sense,” Louis muttered to himself before releasing his hold on my and offering a small, shaky smile. He rose to his feet and grabbed a towel from where it was hanging before he crouched back down in front of me. Slowly and methodically, he dried my hair with it before he wrapped it around my body. It was only then I realized my lack of clothing. My cheeks burned red and I looked down, clutching the fabric tighter to me.
“Let’s get you some clothes, luv,” he said quietly, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and guiding me to my feet. “I threw yours in the wash once you got in the shower so you’ll have to wear some of mine, yeah?” I nodded, cursing myself for not bringing a bag like liam had told me to. I was too busy being stubborn to realize that I was hauled off to the car without the duffel still in my bedroom.
“Would a tshirt and pants work?” he asked softly, making sure not to startle me out of my reverie.
“U-Uh yeah. That’s fine,” I said, taking the clothes from him, my face paling as I threw the black pair of boxers on top. “Ew, Lou!”
“I told you a shirt and pant-oh bloody hell. Boxers, underwear….whatever you Americans call them,” he groaned. “They’re clean love, I promise. Now I’m going to go and tell the boys that we’ll be right out. Get changed and meet us out there, yeah?”
“But Louis-“ I tried hesitantly, only to have him scamper out, closing the door behind him. I sighed, but nonetheless put on his clothes and quietly shuffled out to the living room, three boys heads turning to look at me.
“Niall!”
“Brinlee!”
“You know her?”
“H-Harry?”
“B-Brinlee?”
“Aaaand I’m Louis simply for the sake that I feel left out.”
Silence…
“I-I’m gonna go get a drink or something,” I stuttered in shock as I realized that my coworker I ditched and a boy who forced himself on me were sitting on the couch just a room away. I literally ran to the kitchen, slamming into the counter as I took labored breaths; it was all too much. The boys, the kidnapping, the cutting, my…my father. I couldn’t take the thoughts swimming around my head and I felt my body reaching that familiar level of panic that I hadn’t experienced for over a month.
“Damnit,” I wheezed, leaning against the wall as I ran my fingers painfully hard through my hair, trying to breathe.
“Oi…don’t do that to yourself, sweetheart,” Niall said softly from the doorway, hands casually tucked into the pockets of his sweatpants. My head snapped over to look at him, overwhelmed tears in my eyes as my lip quivered. His brow furrowed and he quickly straightened up, concern flooding his features.
“Y-You know h-how you sa-said I could c-come to you i-if I ev…ever needed h-help?” I croaked hoarsely from emotion.
“Of course,” he said quickly, his tongue dashing out and nervously wetting his lips.
“I need help, Niall,” I managed before breaking down, shoulders slumping and face dropping to my hands as I sobbed hysterically, panicked wheezes leaving my rather tight feeling lungs. Warm hands cupped the tops of my arms and suddenly I was being hugged to a comforting chest, both our bodies being guided to the floor so I was resting in his lap.
“Breathe, Brinlee,” he soothed softly petting my hair as he adjusted my head to rest on the right side of his chest. “It’s going to pass, babe. It’s just a bit of panic, yeah? It’s only temporary.”
“N-No!” I squeaked. “I-It won’t go away because-because all of this is happening and oh m-this is all real! I-I-NO!” I wailed incoherently.
“What’s going on in here?” I heard faintly before Niall’s chest rumbled with a small ‘I’ve got this, mate.’
“Brinlee,” my name was murmured evenly, demandingly yet still gentle. “You’re okay, lass. I want you to listen to my heart beat, alright? It helps.” Our bodies slowly swayed and he quietly counted his heartbeats, my attention gradually shifting to the steady thrum in his chest.
“Everything will be alright,” he whispered softly, pressing a kiss to my temple. I could feel my eyes closing gradually as I drifted, a single tear slipping onto my cheek as fear continued to pound through my veins. My consciousness slipped, but not before I heard a quiet “get Liam on the damn phone. We’re screwed…”
