I woke up before Sydney. All I could think about was sneaking of into the Timothy's Tough Tests building to meet Mr. Timothy so I could go to the training institute. Then Sydney would come to try and stop me, get tangled up in everything see how awesome going to the institute would be then decide to stay there with me and it would all be one big happy party. Unfortunately I doubted that would happen. Instead Sydney would scream at me for running off and she would some how drag me back and we would never find a way home. I didn't want that to happen but if I stayed here I would still never get home and nothing exciting would ever happen. I would become an old man in my 40s and all I would have in my life would be sit on a park bench.
I wasn't about to let the happen. The sun was still coming up as I sneaked past Sydney. Only a few feet away from her I stepped on a branch.
Over on the bench Sydney didn't move.
"Thank goodness" I said quietly as I moved along careful not to step on anything else.
I got to the Timothy's Tough Tests building just as it was opening. I went inside and looked at the clock it was 8:42. I saw that I had about two hours until I was supposed to meet Mr. Timothy. So I sat down on a chair and drifted off to sleep.*********************************
When I woke up again it was 10:27 so I found my way over to Mr. Timothy's office and was just about to knock on the door when it opened and Mr. Timothy's face appeared in the doorway.
"Ryan I'm so glad you could make it, but where is Sydney?" He asked
"She decided not to come."
"That's a shame, follow me please."
We went out the front door where a very angry looking Sydney was staring right at me.
"Ryan!" She said "How did I know you were going to sneak off?"
"Sydney, I'm so glad you decided to join us." Mr. Timothy said as a black limo drove up and a chauffeur opened the door.
"I'm so not getting in there." Sydney complained
Then Mr. Timothy pushed Sydney and I into the limo and climbed in himself.
"This is like kidnapping; don't you need permission from a guardian to do something like this?"
"Why would i need permission?" He asks like its on honest question.
"Sydney was quiet the rest of the trip. We stopped once for gas then continued on.
When we got there it looked like it was a summer camp. There were small cabins lined up and a large building to the left of the cabins. Next to that was a building a little smaller then the other one that said cafeteria. Bigger cabins were lined up behind the smaller ones that had labels, like survival, virtual, and so on. The very last building was a sweet shop.
Mr. Timothy showed us the cabin that Sydney would be staying in. It had beds for six but there was just one other girl in it besides Sydney. The girl looked about the same age as Sydney, maybe a little older. She had brown hair tied up in a ponytail and green eyes that sparkled like a gem. She wore a green T-shirt that said Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. She had on baggy sweat pants and tennis shoes. She looked rather stunning.
The room was dark and dreary. The only decoration was a few pictures taped up by a bunk bed. I hoped my cabin would be a little more decorative.
Then Mr. Timothy and I left and he showed me my room it was exactly like Sydney's cabin. Also like in Sydney's cabin there was only one other guy. He had brown hair, brown eyes and a few freckles on his face. He wore a black baseball tee and jean shorts despite the cool spring day.
"Hi, I'm Ryan. What's your name?" I asked him.
"I'm Jacob" he replied with a kind smile.
"So where is everyone else?" I asked
"They are all in different cabins."
"So are Jacob and I the only ones in this cabin?" I turned around to ask Mr. Timothy but he was already gone.
"What bunk do you want there's lots of options." Jacob said trying to make me laugh.
"Where are you sleeping?" I asked
"Here." He pointed to a top bunk in the left corner.
"Then I'll take this one." I said pointing to the one across from his.
Jacob and I began talking, when a bell sounded.
"What's that?" I asked
"That's just the bell saying we have to go to the shack."
"What's the shack?"
"It's just the main building. Every year before camp starts there's an opening, we better get there so we get good seats."
The shack didn't look that big form the outside it was made from logs and a tin roof.
Weird, I thought.
As we entered the building I saw that it was a lot bigger on the inside. The seats looked like they were from a movie theater were lined up in rows. The giant stage gave it a look of a music concert.
Sydney entered right behind me I looked at her she glared at me. She was next to the girl from her cabin who now wore a light blue jacket.
"Do you know who that is?" I asked Jacob, pointing to the girl that was from Sydney's cabin.
"That's Aubrey," He said looking at me with mystery in his eyes. "Why?"
"No reason"
"You sure?"
"Yah, come on we need to find a seat." I said trying to avoid the question. We took our seats behind Sydney and Aubrey.
When everyone was seated a woman came out and introduced herself as Mrs. Garcia. She was a skinny woman who looked to be in her early 30s. She had blond hair and a pointy noise that held red glasses.
"I am the secretary of the Training Institute." She began. "For any of our first year students this is how we work. You will get up at seven o'clock Monday-Saturday
A chorus of groans went around the room.
"Sunday is a rest day and you can sleep in as late as you want and have fun. You can do anything that doesn't get you in trouble." She continued. "Breakfast will be served at 7:00-8:00. If you miss it then I'm sorry but no breakfast. This same rule applies for lunch and supper. After breakfast you will go to your first class, then your next class, then lunch, after that you will go to three more classes before supper then after supper you are free to do whatever you want. Just keep in mind that you must be in bed lights out by 10:00. Someone will come by each of the cabins and check to make sure that you are all in bed with lights out. If you are not there will be consciences."
"Its just like school only the subjects are more fun. I don't get why they do this every year. You'd think they could summarize." Jacob whispered into my ear.
"And I hope you all have a wonderful summer hear at camp this year, and now I'll turn it over to Mr. Timothy." Mrs. Garcia announced as she walked of stage.
Mr. Timothy entered holding a microphone.
"Welcome ladies and gentlemen." He began. "If you don't know me I'm Mr. Timothy owner of this Training Institute were you will learn survival skills and life time lessons. You may have thought that this camp sounds like school. Now that's were your wrong. Yes this camp has a routine and schedule like school but the classes are anything but school related. For example do you learn how to find water in a desert with nothing but sand for miles? Do you learn how to find your way home in a lush green jungle? And the favorite of most students, you learn how to use weaponry."
"Weaponry?" I heard Sydney gasp
"A schedule of your classes is located by your cabin door next to the fire escape map. Everyone in your cabin will share the same schedule. So if Mathew is in your cabin he will have all the same classes as you. It is important that you do well in your classes because as you may know already, the best of my students will go on quests to retrieve certain items that will be valuable to the institute's success. We call this MIIT, Missions Importance of the Institutes Training. You will be given more information on this later if you are chosen. That's all we have today. If you have any questions I and the rest of my staff would be happy to answer them. I hope you all have a wonderful summer." Mr. Timothy said as he walked of stage, the lights hitting his newly shinned shoes.
