In just a few sentences she raised so many questions. How was she talking with her mother? Did she know how to get home? Was she hiding how to get home for some reason? I was just about to ask her more when the creature let out another ball of fire. The heat was excruciating. It singed the tip of my horses tail. I stopped my horse and turned her around. I wanted to be the hero for once. I raised my sword and charged the beast. Each time the horses hooves hit the ground my nerves grew more and more uneasy. The wallabim lifted its giant foot and crashed it down missing me by only a foot or two. The horse reared spooked. My fingers missed the reins and I fell onto the ground with a thud.
Again the foot was crashed down next to me. This time one of the claws scratched deep into my back. It felt as if a nail was pushed into my back and then dragged down. I let out a long exasperated scream.
I looked back at my friends who had come to my aid. Sydney had stayed behind. She had her eyes closed and her hands raised. Her face was twisted and turning with every second a deeper and deeper red. Between her hands a small clear bubble appeared. It grew larger and larger passing through us protecting us in from the beast like a shield. The wallabim swung its paws at the shield but it stayed.
"That was entirely stupid." Isaac yelled at me. "You don't just run off and try to kill an un killable beast by yourself."
"I'm sorry I was just trying to help." I chocked out trying not to scream again from pain. I could feel the blood dripping down my back. "You all seem to know what your doing all the time even Sydney. I'm just like your extra baggage you have to bring along for the trip."
"We don't have time for this. Ryan we will talk about this later okay?"
I nodded. "We work as a team from now on. So how do you kill a wallabim?"
"You don't." Sydney gasped struggling to keep up the invisible shield.
"But before you said-"
"I said she told me how to defeat one. You don't kill it."
"Then how to you defeat a wallabim?"
Suddenly the wallabim swung it tail and hit against the shield. It shattered, the pieces disappeared before even hitting the ground. Sydney collapsed exhausted.
I knew I would soon too not only from the cut on my back but since we were bonded.
Sydney muttered out "You need to pay a price. A life."
"What?" Isaac yelled. "We can't just hand over one of us to die."
"It needs a meal."
"A human?" Jacob asked suddenly frightened
"No, an animal. A deer or something."
"Ryan you can imagine one right?"
"Well actually-"
"Good, hurry before it takes one of us instead."
I didn't have the strength for this but this could be my chance to prove to my team that I was capable. I imagined a large dead buck. I felt the strength practically drain right out of me. I fell to the ground. My eyes fluttered open. The deer lay in front of the wallabim just as I had imagined it in my head.
From behind me I heard Courtney scream. "Ryan your hurt. Your back!" She rushed over to me. She hesitated before placing her hand on my back.
The wallabim examined the deer throughly. "This will do. Few know how to deal with a wallabim like myself and wind up dead. Your wisdom has proved you well, congratulations. What brought you to the map?"
Isaac stepped forward to answer. He explained our situation back at the camp and how people's powers are being taken. He explained how we needed the map to find the sword so we could return everyones powers and stop whoever was taking them.
"Your cause it noble so I will help you. I may not be able to give you the sword but I can give you this. A bright flash of light blinded me when I could see again two more peices of paper lay on the ground.
Isaac approached them slowly. His face lit up. "It's the last two pieces of the map."
We all became ecstatic.
"You should also know that their is a trader amount you."
A trader? No, we were all friends none of us would do that. Right?
Isaac defended us saying "Forgive me great wallabim but I think your mistaken."
The creatures said nothing more about it. "I must be off." With that it opened its wings and flew away.
"The wallabim must gave been wrong I know none of you are traitors." Isaac said reassuring.
Courtney turned her attention back towards me. "Ryan I can't look at your wound with your shirt on, do you mind?"
"No." I sat up only enough to take off my shirt. I fell back onto the ground.
Courtney gasped again. "Aubrey retrieve some water, cruacion fruit, and biscus leaves from my pack. They should be on my horse. Aubrey did so very quickly. As she did I noticed Isaac and Sydney share a kiss.
A sting from my back distracted me from that. I grunted.
"I'm sorry but we have to stop it from getting infected. This does sting but we need to use it. It's a mixture of the three items I told Aubrey to get."
I nodded telling her to continue.

instead of concentrating on the pain I concentrated on the soft cool touch of Courtney's fingers on my skin.
"Aubrey could you please get me the bandages too. And Ryan can you sit up now please?"
I struggled to sit up as Aubrey handed Courtney the bandages. Courtney wrapped it around my torso several times. She handed me my shirt. 'Its kind of caked in blood right now but-"
"That's okay, thank you."
She smiled her eyes sparkling.
