Emilia to the side -->
Chapter 2 Registration
I had everyone packed a few days after the announcement. I was the only one who still had to pack; other than Damien. We had decided that we would leave a few days before the deadline. He wanted to be gone as soon as possible. It seemed like the hunters had increased their patrols. I still had no idea where we were going though.
When I sat on my bed, staring around the room I shared with Savannah and Mabel, I realized that I didn’t bring much with me. From our home anyways; we had bought supplies the first day we arrived at the cabin. I probably wouldn’t ever go back home either.
Of course there wasn’t really much stuff at home other than toys and clothes since we didn’t really keep a photo album or anything keepsake worthy. That was depressing. We were about to make a huge change and there wasn’t anything to remember the old by.
I sighed and started to pack my things. I only packed a couple outfits since everything else smelled like skunk. I knew I’d end up throwing them out once we reached where ever we were going. Then I was done. Well that was easy. Where are those easy buttons when I need one?
I decided I wanted to be on the roof. I hadn’t gone up there in what felt like years. I remembered how Damien and I would spend hours on the roof and stare at the stars. When it was warm out I’d spend entire nights on the roof. I always got to the roof through Damien’s window. The roof was low enough that it was easy to climb onto.
It was a slanted roof but it wasn’t too steep so I could lie down and fall asleep. I was completely safe up here. The night sky was clear and I saw the stars perfectly when I climbed onto the roof.. The air was chilly but it wasn’t horrible. I wouldn’t have been able to sleep out here without freezing to death though. Tomorrow we would hit the road; officially beginning the rest of our lives, however long that was.
I heard muffled footsteps on the roof. I glanced over to see Damien carefully moving across the roof. He sat next to me without uttering a word. We stayed like that for hours, taking solace in each other’s company. Even though we didn’t speak a word to each other.
“We should go back in.” Damien broke the silence. I shrugged. I wasn’t ready to go back in yet.
“Do you think we’ll ever come back here?”
“To this skunk infested place? No way.”
I chuckled, “I’m serious though.”
“I’m not sure,” Damien answered, “But I don’t think we will.”
“That’s what bothers me.” I sighed, “I’m going to miss this place; even if it smells like skunk.”
“We grew up here.” He agreed, “I think I’ll miss it too. A lot of memories were made here.”
When he stopped talking I looked over at him. In the moonlight he looked tired and older. He had bags under his eyes and he had a pained look in his eyes whenever he thought I wasn’t looking.
“I think we should talk about that day.” There, I had finally said it.
“No.”
“You’re still upset.” I said softly, “Talking will help.”
“I don’t want to talk about it!” He snapped.
I held my hands up, “Okay, but don’t think this is over.”
We settled back into silence but my mind was whirling. He needed to talk about it. I needed to talk about it! It was driving me insane. I was shaken awake nearly every day by Savannah or Mabel. When I closed my eyes I saw Cali falling to the ground. It just wouldn’t stop replaying in my head. I wished I had Emma or Tyler here.
