Chapter 30 End of a Brother (Part 3)
Damien’s torso heaved. Every time he breathed it looked like it caused tremendous amount of pain. From where I stood, nearly twenty yards away, I saw the pain flicker across his features before it disappeared. I watched as his face flickered again, but not in pain. His face contorted into a mask of undiluted rage. He took a lumbering step forward.
I saw movement to my left and I jumped, thinking I had let an enemy sneak up on me. It was Emma though and I realized Abe stood on my right. I was flanked by friends. My gaze snapped back to Damien. He was slowly making his way towards us and I was suddenly glad I wasn’t facing him alone. I had Emma and Abe. I wasn’t alone. Although the way Damien’s eyes were narrowed on me, and only me, sure made it feel like I was alone. I was his only target; I doubted he even noticed Emma and Abe were there.
I shouldn’t have been surprised when charged at me. He had already told me his intention was to kill me. I guess a little part of me had hoped he would have come to his senses but I had given him plenty of chances. He wasn’t changing his mind.
Silently, I prepared myself for what I had to do. I hated it but like Emma said, I had to stop putting the few above the many.
I charged at him.
The world slowed in that one moment. In that moment, everything was clear. Damien was charging towards us, rage etched in every corner of his face. His mouth was open in what seemed like a never ending roar. I saw magic bolts fly past my head as they headed towards Damien but they always seemed to curve around him defected at the last moment. I only heard my own breathing; in and out, in and out.
I was only focused on Damien. I couldn’t let anything else distract me. I had too much riding on me: my family’s safety, my friends and their families, and people who I’ve never met. They depended on me. If I wasn’t able to figure out how to use amoveatur onus I didn’t know what I’d do. It was the only option I had.
Grimshaw would destroy the world if I didn’t stop him. I had to do this.
Then everything sped up again and the sounds of battle reached my ears again. Damien had his hands stretched out for me and at the last minute I spun to the left.
He sailed past. Even at the momentum he was going he was able to turn towards to me and his hand nearly grabbed me but Abe crashed into him. The two of them crashed to the ground and mud splattered everywhere.
Damien had shifted his attention from me to Abe. Abe was grappling with Damien trying to keep him subdued. I saw it was taking a toll though. Abe had only been keeping him down for a few minutes but I could see his arms shake with the effort.
I had no idea how I could help him. I wasn’t nearly as strong as him. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Emma weaving magic. “What are you doing?” I called to her.
She yelled back without looking, “Help keep him still!”
I noticed Damien was getting the upper hand so as swiftly as I could, I ran to them. I grabbed his arm right before he was able to hit Abe. It turned into an arm wrestling match after that. He was slowly winning. His arm kept moving a couple inches forward and his whole body thrashed under Abe’s weight.
But then he froze. His arm stopped inching forward and his efforts to throw Abe off had ceased. Abe tiredly pushed himself to his feet. He wiped the back of his hand across his forehead. It was then I noticed Emma had frozen as well.
“What is she doing?” I whispered to Abe.
He shrugged, “The only thing I could think of it that whatever she casted affected her as well.”
