Jet to the side -->

Chapter 5 Trouble

I woke with a start and the image of Delilah’s bloody face faded. I clenched my fists. I slowly sat up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. I was sure the dream would fade; I just had to get used to everything. I had never accepted change very well.

A banging at my door brought me out of my thoughts. Then I heard Kole’s voice, “I’m hungry! What’s for breakfast?”

I pushed myself out of bed and ambled to the door. I tugged it open and said, “What do you want?”

“Cereal.”

“To the kitchen then!” I yelled and pointed, “I’ll race ya!”

I took off down the hallway and naturally Kole won. I took a slow lazy step into the kitchen and saw Kole at the counter. He already had the essentials out. Our apartment kitchen was very nice, it had all new appliances; it looked like it was newly remodeled. Too bad it was being taken out, but we’ll probably use these appliances for the new kitchen.

I got a call yesterday from the contractors. They said they’d be able to fit our apartment in today since all they had to do was knock down a few, okay a lot of walls, convert one of the kitchens into a giant one and add a bathroom. I don’t know how they considered that not a lot to do. It sounded like a lot of work. Although they did get a lot of free kitchen appliances that they had to figure out how to get downstairs. But they were costing a fortune so they could figure that out on their own.

All together the contractors would knock out all the walls adjacent to the main hallway and it would become the living room. In my apartment, the kitchen and living room would turn into our library. In the apartment Savannah and Mabel had claimed the living room and dining room would be completely taken out for more space in the main living room. Eli and Felix would remain the same except their kitchen and dining room would be combined and completely open which lead to the TV room and the boy’s rooms. Jet’s apartment would lose the kitchen and dining room. Kim and Joey’s room was a little bit more complicated. Kendra’s room would be removed and she would move to the living room of her apartment and a bathroom would be added.

Again, I thought it was a lot of work for one day but these contractors promised that it would all be done. I had to finish everything else up though, like the primer and painting. I had to make the mess they left made pretty. It was how I was given a list of what everybody wanted for their rooms. Someone got wind that I was going out today. Kole must have ratted me out, the little brat. And here I was, pouring milk onto his cereal.

Kendra, whose new obsession was the dictionary wanted black and white paint. She wanted to paint her room like a dictionary. I told her she was a nerd. She laughed, said she wasn’t a nerd just someone with a healthy love for the dictionary. I wondered how long this obsession would last, she had a new one every week. Who knew? Maybe she finally found her calling.

Thomas loved baseball. Like absolutely loved it. He kicked me off the TV whenever a game was on. Jet was the same, only his sport was football. It was always amusing when they both had a game on and had to fight each other for the TV. They both wanted green paint, which caused another fight, until Jet said he wanted blue and orange for the Denver Broncos and possibly a logo if I was able to find one. Then Thomas wanted white and blue paint and a logo too. Sometimes I thought they should have been the twins instead.

Eli knew three, or four, different languages. He told me once there was something beautiful about each language. He wanted to know all of them. So far, though, he has only learned, English, Russian, and Latin. I thought he was also learning Spanish but he hadn’t officially told me. On the other hand, he had told me he wanted blue and green paint.
