Chapter 1 The Mall Incident

The Mall Incident, as it would later be known as, happened on October 17th. It had been a quiet and sunny Wednesday afternoon. It was warm and hazy with a cool breeze. On this day I was stuck in school. I saw the trees rustle in the breeze through the window. How I wished I was out there and not in here. I jumped when the bell rung and chairs scraped against the floor. I glanced wistfully outside one last time before I stood up and wandered out into the hall.

I spotted Tyler and Emma immediately. They were next to my locker, probably waiting for me to get out of class. I pushed past them to unlock my locker. I realized pretty quickly that they were fighting again; the two of them probably didn’t realize I was here. It took a few minutes but Emma turned towards me, “There you are! I’ve been waiting for you forever! I need you say I’m right Emilia.”

I glanced at Tyler and shrugged, “She’s right.”

“You can’t agree with her!” Tyler blurted, “You always agree with her!”

                “I’m sorry?”

Emma turned back to Tyler with a smug grin, “See I’m right.”

He shook his head, “No. Red is obviously the best color.”

                “Yellow.”

                “Red.”

                “Yel-“

“Guys!” I interrupted, “Blue is best the color and I would love to prove it but we’re going to be late.” I slammed my locker shut just as the first bell went off. Both of their eyes widened and they took off down the hall without so much as a goodbye. I chuckled and walked the few steps to my next class, history. I took my seat and promptly stared out the window. Luckily I only had two more classes, including this one, before I could leave.

“Class! Please take out your review packets.” Ms. Matthews instructed. Ms. Matthews was my history teacher. She was a small woman and looked as gentle as could be. It was a shocker the first time I saw her break up a fight. “The first half a class will be silent and if, and I mean only if, I think you’ve been working hard you can work with partners the second half.”

Groans emitted around the room but were quickly replaced by shuffling papers. I dug around in my bag until I found the review packet. Ten minutes into class Damien burst into the classroom, well he hadn’t really ‘burst’ he more of walked into the room without knocking. “Excuse me Miss,” He glanced around the room, making it look like it was for a name, “Mathews, but I need to talk to my sister please.”

Ms. Mathews glanced in my direction and nodded, “Please don’t keep her for long. We have test next class and we’re reviewing for it today.”

“Of course Miss.” He nodded then glanced at me and motioned with his hands to hurry up.

I stuffed my things back into my bag without a care and followed him out the classroom. I wondered what was going on. Damien pretty much never acknowledged any of us in school let alone disrupted my class. It was what older brothers did.

“What’s going on?” I asked deciding that if he wouldn’t start talking I would.

“You need to pick up the triplets and Kole and meet us at the Cabin.” He responded curtly.
