' I waited 5 long, torturous months without you. Today was the day you would return to me. I've missed you so much that words cannot explain my longing to see your face. I remember the day you left, the day you were going to leave me and my burning love for you behind. But it was your decision, and I cannot tell you how to live your life for you. And with you gone for the war, my anxious need to feel your presence.
Today is also the day I confess my bottled up affection for you, a feeling I've had since the day I met you. I meant to tell you sooner but I was unsure if it was just a phase. But now that your gone I can see that I want you here with me every second of the day. I just can't wait to see you beautiful violet eyes, your soft, rich, chestnut hair, and hear your majestic piano melody-'
A knock on the door brought the girl's hand to an abrupt stop. As she set the pencil down on the desk, she walked to the door, opening it with a bright smile. A war soilder stood straight and stern, hand held against his forehead in salute. "Yes may I help you?" she asks. "Ms. _____ ______?" he questioned. "Yes..." she answered more impatient. "I have a telegram for you." he replies, reaching in his coat pocket and pulled out a small, white emvelope. _______ took the emvelope out of the man's large hand. "Thank you..." she trailed off staring at the object in her grasp intently. The man soluted and walked away leaving ______ to close the door.
She looked at the emvelope in curiosity. 'could it be another letter from Roderick?' she thought her smile shifting into a grin. _____ ripped open the evelope in excitment. Her eyes skimed through the words on the flimzy sheet of paper in her hands. Her eyes, widened, her grin faultered into nothing, her mind went completly blank. 'What no...this has got to be a joke. This...this can't be true. He can't...he couldn't have...no...' she thought desperately, tears pooling in her (e/c) eyes. She read the text over and over again, clearly not wanting to beileve what she was looking at.
Her hand covered her mouth, trying to muffle an aching sob, but failed miserably. The message fell from her now opened hand floating gracefully to the ground. "No.." was the only thing she choaked out before her knees gave in sending her to a sobbing heap on the floor. The telegram half open on the floor next to her shaking figure, held the word she most feared to see, the very words she prayed not to hear, was on that very sheet.
'In Loving Memory
Roderick Edelstein
killed in action, body not recovered...'
"You...promised..."
