The night of Freshers eve, no one slept. We all sat in the mess sharing our experiences, each one eager to tell how many guys proposed to her and none in the mood to listen. Next day at the dissection table, I and Savita sat with swollen eyes due to lack of sleep. I could sense the guys on our table eyeing us suspiciously.
"Lack of sleep, huh? What made you stay awake all night?" Yash finally asked us.
Before I could answer, Arun said, "Reframe your question Yash. Ask 'who made you stay awake all night.'" At that all guys started laughing.
I and Savita looked at each other. We are no less, her face said.
"Okay, now that you all know, let me tell you all, I am in love with Rishi Tripathi." Savita announced.
"And I have a huge crush on Amey Shrivastava," I too announced proudly.
Guys were taken aback by our blatant confessions.
"And you think they will fall for you?" Arun asked after a silent pause.
"That's not the point. You asked who stole our sleep. We answered that. Now we will try to steal their sleep," I winked at Savita.
"Those guys won't even look at you two," Samay said.
"How do you know that?" Savita countered.
"Because Rishi Tripathi has a girlfriend," he told us.
"Girlfriend, not wife...girlfriend can change," Savita said, winking at me.
"And as far as I know, Amey is single," I said, looking at Arun. Arun stayed silent.
"So Arun, tell me, did you find someone yesterday who made you forget your sleep?" I asked to keep him talking.
"Why, ofcourse he did! I saw him spending quality time with Ragini in a corner yesterday", Savita said. At that, our whole table burst out laughing and Arun turned red. Ragini was a chronic senior (was in second year since five years) and must be weighing atleast 100 odd kgs or so.
"So will you please share with us the details of your sweet encounter?" I teased Arun.
Arun was visibly as upset as he was embarrassed. "Sweet encounter my foot!" he blurted. We all laughed more.
"And I heard Ragini didn't sleep all night," I added. We all laughed even more. Arun did not reply.
As I was gathering my things after dissection, Arun said, "You enjoy teasing me, huh?"
"Who started it all?" I demanded.
He was silent for a moment.
"What?" I asked.
"Do you really have a crush on Amey?" he asked seriously.
"Yes, a huge one, why do you ask?"
He took a long pause. I began getting impatient.
"Because...this is what I heard, mind you..," he stopped mid-sentence.
"Go on!" I pleaded.
"He too has a crush on you."
I was nonplussed. Out of all the good looking girls in my batch, Amey had a crush on me??
Arun began to leave. I gathered my senses. "Hey wait, tell me what exactly you heard?"
Arun did not stop. He turned around, walking. "I told you what you wanted to hear, bye," and he was gone.
As I lay in bed that night, my mind automatically travelled back to Freshers eve, the part where I was with Amey. I remembered his light brown eyes, his silky black hair, the cute dimple on his cheek...God! He is handsome! Was Arun telling me the truth? Really? He said he told me what I wanted to hear. Yes, I wanted to hear what he had said, but I also wanted to know the truth. I will dig into the topic again tomorrow, I thought as I cuddled for a good night sleep.
