Chapter 11

I kept my head down when I walked near the girls, but none the less I couldn’t seem to be invisible enough. There bright glares contrasting from the dull skies above, a light rain drumming on us. I stole a little glance towards them, eyes piercing into mine. But the one whose eyes I gravitated towards the most was Robin, a delicate mint color. There was nothing delicate about that girl though.

“I wonder if your mother would approve of the hopeless person you are.” Robin chided in a low growl. I stiffened for a moment but resumed walking, not looking behind at them.  I decided it be best if I pretended Robin didn’t exist. It was better than giving a response to her spitting comments, or waiting for one after another to be delivered.  Especially now that her brother and I have been meeting in secret these past few days, it just felt better to leave it at be.

I was coming closer to Ella’s house and a part of me grew excited, I stepped up to the door and rapt my knuckles on the wood lightly. The door softly opened after a moment of wait, only to reveal the old woman.  A wise smile graced her lips and she ushered me inside.  But we weren’t in there for long before she was pulling me out through the back door. My nose was enveloped by strong spices and sweet fragrant flowers. Slightly surprised I had expected them to be ruined by the storm that had lasted for days.

But no, not at all. My eyes were overflowing with vibrant colors and shades. Today Ella and I were going to harvest from her garden. Not a word spoken between us, as she pulled me over to a stout plant with wide purple leaves. I was surprised to see such an exotic plant.

“This here is a Helgusi. It’s used as a heavy sleeping medicine,” Ella explained carefully, a burning admiration drifting into her eyes as she spoke. “I want you to put on these gloves and strip off the leaves and into this bag.” She held the bag and gloves out to me; I pulled the gloves on excitedly and went to work. I could smell a faint sweetness to the plant and as I crouched down to start plucking away the leaves Ella spoke again.

“Don’t take in the scent directly on, you might pass out.” Ella warned carefully while she dug oddly shaped herbs from the ground. I followed her orders warily and did as I was told. After a few minutes of this work, all the Helgusi were bare. Ella moved me to my next plant. I sat to admire it, it looked to be a very curious flower.

Its petals were translucent; you could see the slightly veiny insides to it. Ella instructed me to dig the flowers out of the soft dirt, making sure to get the roots as cleanly as possible. There were various plants after this. So many I couldn’t even count. All of their names more exotic as than the next.

There was something darkly beautiful about this garden, I thought. From sweet sugary spices to deathly poisons.  Ella handled the more dangerous plants though, much to my disappointment.  After a while of picking her garden dry, we stopped and had some tea.

“Where do you get these plants?” I asked inquiringly, she peered at me a moment before looking off in another direction. She decided not to answer my question. I gazed around at the now mostly bare garden and noticed a large spindly tree giving dark shade in the corner, it hid the doors to the cellar. I paused for a moment, my lips pursing in thought.
