Chapter 17
My bed rest has been released, and a new ache rests in my mussels. One of soreness, but not from injury, but from the long amount of time it has been since they were put to real use. The elders lean casually against the trees lining the clearing, a girl around my age offering them wine, wine is for special occasions.
She’s bundled thickly in rabbit fur, eyes an iridescent blue and pale white hair twisted back. The frosts against the ground cold against my feet making me feel chilled to the very bone, goose flesh pricking all over my skin. I’m standing by Mason; I glance at him as he watches the girl with a curious hunger. My inner wolf paces its fur twitching in agitation. I look up at the barely setting sun. Early practice. Usually early practices held significance to them.
Carlisle watches the girl with the same curious hunger as she pours a burgundy liquid into his goblet, my eyes narrow. What is with their infatuation with her? I glance quickly at Philip majorly irritated when I see confliction against his own eyes, and see that the girl is blushing under the intense stares.
I sigh and take a step forward against the line of others, raising a fist to my chest in a show of respect before bowing slightly towards Carlisle, it’s an old fashioned motion but it might get me farther in progressing this lesson. Everyone’s eyes grudgingly turn towards me.
“Sir, if we should progress into this meeting we should begin soon, do you not think?” My tone is polite but my eyes must show some sort of irritation because a few of the elder’s chuckle and Carlisle motions for the girl to step back in ranks. She bows her head politely and her blonde curls twist in the motion. My eyes meet hers for a moment and she shy’s away immediately, I can see her own wolf bowing slightly in grudging respect. Mason lets out a laugh through the link and I growl right back.
“Yes, yes, of course young Ellington.” Carlisle steps forwards addressing us, his goblet sloshing wine with the movement. The smell of fermented grapes traveling to my nose.
“As you know, today is the winter solstice. A night of merriment and of strength to prosper. So what better of a night to start something different?” My eyes widen slightly at the thought of change. Usually everything stays the same, traditions and morals still the same as they were from the beginning.
“I have experimented with a few of you on the matter, and I hope that you have kept the secret.” He adds, his tone darkly delighted. “Combat, with weapons. I figure you should be taught how to defend one another while in this form as well.” He motions a hand to his human body. I raise a brow but remember Philip telling me about this training he had taken part in.
“So if you would all get more fully dressed?” Carlisle asks motioning to the trees which were strung with abandoned clothes. My body complies, only dressed in a tight corset and a petticoat. I dress with a sigh as I put back on my grey dress; the satin is simple but accentuates my bodice. I pull over my new black cloak the colors shimmering differently in the warm colors of sunset. I turn swiftly to make my way back and bump into Mason. His dark cloak contrasting his yellow eyes.
