Pearl's POV

I walked down the docs, looking for a flicker of silver light in the water.

The waves were as dark as the sky, and no one was in sight.

Pale was still probably at dinner and she said she would tell me everything.

"Psssst! Hey Pearl!"

I looked down and saw Matthew, staring straight up at me.

"Hey," I said as I kneeled down to see him better.

"You seem to be doing alright."

I shrugged. I guess I've been doing okay, I just haven't really been doing much.

"The human world is a mess," Matthew said. "But, I'm surprised I haven't really missed it yet."

"I like it here."

"I wish you were a mermaid through," Matthew said.

"Why?"

Matthew shrugged. "I'm used to Pale doing all the ruling. I've never known how much stress it puts on someone. Next time I see her, I'll give her credit."

I could hear murmurs in the distance, a flashlight beam hit the side of the doc.

"Quick Matthew!" I whispered. "There are people!"

I looked back over, but the merman was gone.

"Hey! Girl! What are you doing here this late at night?"

I looked over to the other doc.

"Oh hello officer," I said waving.

"She has a weird accent," whispered one of the men.

Thank god for underwater hearing.

"Maybe she's a tourist."

"We shouldn't arrest tourists."

"Just please ma'am," the officer said to me. "Go home before we arrest you."

Arrest. That didn't sound like a good word.

"Right away sir," I said as I ran off towards Pale's house.
