"And that's how Jubilation got taken away," Adelaide finished, tears brimming in her eyes. Oliver sat next to her and wrapped a large wing around her.
"If it's any consolation, I don't really have any friends," Oliver said.
"You have me," she said. Oliver smiled.
"I guess I do," he said. Adelaide then felt a drop of water on her head. She looked up, and saw that rain was beginning to fall.
"I'll have to go," Oliver said. "If you want to chat, tell carrier pigeons to go to Oliver the FireEyes."
"Thanks Oliver," Adelaide said. She grinned and began running in the direction of her house.
Adelaide slipped inside, wary of her mother. She didn't see or hear her mother, so she dashed upstairs. She had gotten a second dress soaking wet this week. It was the rainy season, yes, but Adelaide normally carried and umbrella. Adelaide went into her room and took her dress off, after putting a different one on, she sat down at her desk. She was going to write to Oliver.
"Oliver," Adelaide started, verbalizing what she was writing because it helped her write, "what's it like in dragon territory? It's really...interesting in human territory, and stress is running high. Have you met any WaterClaw or EarthenWing dragons? Or a CursedTalon dragon? That would be super cool if you did. Right now the King's Festival is going on, and kids are playing games in the streets together. It's really cool. Your friend, Adelaide Wilson." Adelaide folded up the note. She walked to her window with a smile on her face and opened the window. She slightly leaned out and looked to the right, which was where her carrier pigeon's bird house was hung.
"Biscuit!" Adelaide called. The little pigeon stuck its head out of the birdhouse and looked at Adelaide, who smiled at it. Biscuit flew to Adelaide's windowsill. The little pigeon took the note in its feet.
"Bring that to Oliver the FireEyes dragon," Adelaide said, and Biscuit cocked his head. "I know, very suspicious. But he's my friend, all right? Just bring it to him." The pigeon flew off and Adelaide sat on the bed happily.
"Adelaide?" Called a male voice from the hallway. It was Jamie! Adelaide rushed to her door and opened it. She liked Jamie better than Orchid and would take him over Orchid and her mother any day. He smiled down at her. Sure, he was distant and cold sometimes, but otherwise, Jamie was kind to Adelaide. He hugged her quickly. He then glanced down at Adelaide's arm, where there was one of Biscuit's feathers.
"Who did you send a letter to?" He asked. Adelaide glanced at her arm and felt her whole face go red. Jamie smirked and raised and eyebrow.
"Uh...no one," Adelaide said quickly.
"Was it Braxton?" He asked slyly. Braxton was the boy that Adelaide had a crush on, and Jamie knew. He knew and teased her about it all the time.
"No. It was someone else," Adelaide said, folding her arms. Jamie smiled.
"Come on, Adelaide," he said. "You can tell me. I won't tell anyone."
"CursedTalon promise?" She suggested. Jamie rolled his eyes and curved his left hand's fingers to look like talons. Adelaide did the same with her right hand and put the tip of her fingers to his.
"I promise not to tell anyone who you were sending a letter to," Jamie said. "If I tell, a CursedTalon will touch me." Adelaide nodded, satisfied.
"All right," Adelaide said. "I was sending a letter to...to a dragon." Jamie smiled.
"Is it a boy dragon?" Jamie asked, a hint of mischief in his voice.
"Yeah," Adelaide said.
"What kind?"
"A FireEyes dragon."
"How old was he?"
"Fifteen."
"Do you like him?"
"He's a dragon, Jamie. We're not even the same species."
"Nothing is impossible," he said before smirking and walking into his room.
Adelaide walked out of the house that afternoon, aiming to go catch up with a friend of hers. She walked to the edge of human territory and whistles three high notes. Everything was still. Then she heard a wing beat behind her and turned around. Oliver sat there, smiling.
"So," he said, "do you want to go flying?" Adelaide grinned. She had always wanted to do this. Always.
"Of course," Adelaide said.
"Here," Oliver said, crouching next to her. "Climb on my back." Adelaide climbed on the orange and yellow dragon's back. He beat his wings, and they were in the air.
