Adelaide's heart raced, and the blood pounded loudly in her ears. They were being led down poorly lit tunnel of cells. Adelaide hoped they'd be in the same cell. They soon stopped at a cell and the door was thrown open. Oliver was shoved in first and then Adelaide was thrown inside. Tears pooled in Adelaide's eyes. Was there any hope for escape? A tear fell from her grey-brown eyes. Oliver saw this and immediately wrapped his tail around her. She leaned back against his body.
"I wonder if my dad is here," she said. "He was taken by the Council about two years ago. Would I even recognize him now?"
"I bet he's here somewhere," Oliver said, studying the iron bars enclosing them in the cell.
"Psst!" A voice whispered. Adelaide saw the form of a dragon outside their cell.
"Yeah?" She said, walking to the form.
"I'm with the Parliament of Peace. I heard reports of your capture, and I was sent to free you," the dragon said. "I'm Johnathan, by the way."
"I'm Adelaide,"Adelaide said.
"I know. And that dysfunctional FireEyes is Oliver," Johnathan said.
"Dysfunctional?" Adelaide asked. Oliver came and stood by Adelaide, glaring at Johnathan.
"He can't blow fire. Didn't you tell her?" Johnathan said.
"I don't know who you are, or what your deal is, but Adelaide is under the protection of me," Oliver said, his voice, which was normal warm and soothing, was cold and steely. Johnathan sighed.
"Look, I'm here to rescue the both of you. Do you want to be rescued or not?" Johnathan asked.
"Yes!" Adelaide said. Oliver nodded in agreement.
"All right. Come on," Johnathan said. He unlocked the cell door.
"But wait! Before we go...can I find my dad?" Adelaide asked. "He's here somewhere."
"No," Johnathan said simply. "Not yet."
"When?" Adelaide asked, so mad her blood was boiling. "When can I come back for him?"
"Sometime. Now come on," Johnathan said. He led the two out of the tunnel and up a few flights of stairs until they were in a kitchen. He ran to the window and threw it open. Johnathan jumped out. Adelaide wen next, and then Oliver jumped out the window.
The window they had jumped out of was on the ground floor, thankfully.
"All right. I'll lead the way to the headquarters. Just follow," Johnathan said. Adelaide climbed onto Oliver's back. Johnathan took off, and Oliver followed suit.
"Do you think we broke the record for shortest time in the dungeon?" Adelaide asked Oliver.
"Probably," Oliver said. "I would be surprised if we didn't." The moon shine overhead, reminding them how late in the night it was, or if you prefer, how early in the morning. The Stars twinkled overhead, reminding Adelaide of when she went to Oliver's house to escape the siege on the city, and because she had been thrown out by her mother.
"How much farther is it?" Oliver asked Johnathan.
"Not much farther. See that mountain range? That's where we're heading," Johnathan said. Johnathan lead them to a small cave at the peak of one mountain.
"This is it," Johnathan said.
"This tiny, tiny cave is the Parliament headquarters?" Adelaide asked, shocked. She had heard that the Parliament of Peace was absolutely huge and powerful. They didn't have the numbers to stop the war, but they did have enough to make an impact on the war.
"No. Just the entrance," Johnathan said.
"Wait! How did you know our names?" Oliver asked.
"Remember those carrier pigeons you chased when you met each other?" Johnathan said, sighing.
"Yeah," Both Oliver and Adelaide said at the same time.
"Well, those were sent by us. You two becoming friends was an experiment to see how a young human and a young dragon fared together. Adelaide, Mercy was spying to make sure you were the one. And Oliver, Conrad is a spy for the Parliament of Peace. He was the one spying on you to make sure you where the one," Johnathan said. "Can we go inside now?"
"What do you mean, 'the one'?" Adelaide asked, curious.
"Like I said, the one for the experiment. You two are the only ones we experimented on. And it thankfully worked out really well," Johnathan said. "Now, let's go inside."
