The last cabin of the train was almost empty. There were some strange pieces of metal in one corner and what seemed like a tool kit in the other. A few mops and brooms were lying on the metallic floor. There were no chairs or any sort of seating arrangement. A strange lamp was hanging in the middle of the ceiling. It was a transparent globe with fire suspended in the middle of it. It was burning out and light was enough for them to make out the entire cabin but not bright enough to light all the dark corners.

All of them were injured except for Selena. They were taking in turns to heal their wounds. Elair and Seth were the only ones unconscious. Selena was moving the crystal from one to another. Lance and Misha healed fairly quickly. Rain and Elair were still healing but their blood flow had stopped.

Rain was sitting a little away from the others. He was silent. Most of his vision had returned but things were still blurry. Selena wanted to talk to him but had no idea what to say. What if he asked why they hadn’t told him? What would her answer be? To protect him? Because the truth was too painful? The real reason was because they had reached a nonverbal agreement that they weren’t going to let Rain fight his family. They were going to fight in his stead and never let him find out that his only family had tried to kill him. She felt ashamed of herself, of her powerlessness. And now that she thought about it, it had been foolish to think that they could shield Rain from his past, his family. But the Father had told them not to tell him. What was he thinking? It was hard to believe that such a wise and experienced man would make such a foolish decision.

Misha was thinking the same thing. It was strange to see Rain so depressed. The last time he had been like this was when Lance’s arm had been completely severed from his body and Rain had blamed his own powerlessness. At that time Lance had told him to shut up and stop blaming himself. Who was going to snap him back this time?

Selena looked at Seth. How was he able to do something like that? She was sure he had used his black portal to get his blood on her. She hadn’t realized it back then. Her body was aching because of what had happened. All her muscles were pulled and cramped and Misha told her that she was going to come down with a fever. It was because she had performed way above her abilities. Lance might also feel strained and muscle aches but since he had been training for a year, his body will cope with the pressure on some levels. It was no problem for Misha. She was used to winding and nothing Seth had done was going to harm her body. It was unbelievable that someone could orchestrate a battle in his condition. He knew the reason why Rain had gone blind. Selena also wanted to know. It just seemed so random.

Even though nothing good had happened for them so far, Selena couldn’t help but feel slightly elated; they were all together now but with a new person. How was Elair going to react when she wakes up?

Lance stood up and stretch. He walked over to Rain.

‘Hey,’ he said.

Rain didn’t say anything.

‘How’s your sight?’ Lance asked.

Rain shrugged his shoulders. Lance sat down next to him.

‘Listen,’ he said to Rain, ‘I want to thank you.’

‘For what?’ asked Rain.

‘I don’t remember but I was told that I had made a promise to myself that no harm would come to Selena,’ he said, ‘I wasn’t with her yesterday and she suffered so much. But you came and saved her, she told me. Thank you for protecting the promise I made to myself.’

‘Don’t be stupid,’ said Rain tonelessly, ‘she is my friend too. One of the first faces I saw when I tasted freedom. Besides you cannot thank me because we are even.’
