The train they had boarded traveled very fast. Special bridges had been built for the train to travel from one island to another. The setting sun made the surface of the sea sparkle as if diamonds were floating, reflecting the orange light of the sleepy sun. It was a very glamorous view. Lance and Seth had their faces pressed against the windows bars as they lazily looked outside. Misha informed them that they were soon to reach their destination.
Selena was lying on the floor. She had become very sick. Her entire body was aching and she was sweating so much that her clothes were soaking wet. Since they had no wet towels, Misha was using a broom to blow cool air at her face. Selena’s face was red and her breathing was hard. Now that they noticed it, she had blisters on her palms. Misha kept giving her sips of the energy drink they had.
Rain and Elair sat quite far from each other, throwing occasional glances at each other. Rain was still healing from the wound given to him by her. Their situation was rather awkward. None of them had expected them to be all sibling-ishy but no one had anticipated these embarrassing state of affairs either. Rain was busy healing his wounds and eating (to replenish his blood). So this made him less inclined towards weird atmosphere. Elair on the other hand had no idea what to do. She had no idea who to talk to. The only person she knew here was Rain and she didn’t know him at all. Misha looked at her and she reminded her of herself when she had first joined their group. Misha knew that Selena would have changed this odd situation in a comfortable one (she had done so with Misha). Due to her efforts, Misha was able to fit in. But right now Selena was in no shape to do anything. It wasn’t that she wasn’t aware of the funny atmosphere; she kept looking over at Rain and Elair.
Elair looked at Rain after every second, opened her mouth, gulped and then started looking elsewhere. But it seemed there was another person in the cabin other than Selena who was thinking of making the tension disappear. Elair felt a tap of finger on her shoulder. She jumped and looked. It was Lance. He was widely smiling at her face blatantly. She stared at his big girly eyes awkwardly.
‘Um…’ she started.
‘Wanna be my friend?’ he asked.
Selena closed her eyes in frustration. She rolled up a wrapper of their bread and threw it at him.
‘What are you?’ she asked, ‘a four year old?’
Misha sniggered. Lance was still waiting for an answer from Elair.
‘You…you are the peacekeeper, right?’ asked Elair.
He nodded, ‘I have the mark but it doesn’t shine anymore.’
‘Why are you so weak?’ she asked. Misha’s brow furrowed. It was a rude question but she knew that Elair wasn’t being rude deliberately. Her eyes showed no trickery or sharpness of someone mocking the other. Her question had come from pure curiosity. And when Misha thought about it, her question wasn’t all that strange. Lance hadn’t displayed any special powers, neither did he perform extraordinarily, as it was expected from a peacekeeper.
‘That’s because I have lost my powers,’ he said, not offended at all, ‘along with my memories.’
Elair seemed puzzled, probably at the fact that how was he able to be so cheerful after losing his memories and powers. Now when Elair spoke to him, her voice was kind of lowered.
‘A few questions, if you don’t mind, peacekeeper,’ she said.
‘Sure,’ said Lance, ‘but please call me by my name. My name is Lance.’
‘The question is similar to my mother’s,’ she said, ‘why did you free him?’ she jerked her head in Rain’s direction.
‘I just told you,’ said Lance, ‘I have lost my memories, so whatever reasons I had, I don’t remember.’
