Chapter 30: Glitters

Cameron's POV

><><><><><

"What were you even thinking, Cameron?"

I chose to remain silent keeping my eyes fixed on the ground. I've had enough for just one day. I needed a break and a decent shot of rotgut.

"I demand an answer!" He pried me. Make that two shots of rotgut, then. Christ, he was pissing me off even more each moment his droplets of saliva splat on my face. I clenched my hand and thrust it deep into my pocket before sinking further down on my seat. I was on the verge and I could picture the bluish-purple veins in my forehead and arms reveal themselves completely.

"I'm going to repeat my question just one last time and you better respond or else," he forcefully leveled my eyes with his so I'd get intimidated or so, but I wasn't to give in just yet. He continued, "What were you thinking?"

"..."

He suddenly got up from his swivel and banged hard on the table, "Cameron!"

"I wasn't okay? I wasn't thinking at all!" I interjected defensively.

Enough was enough.

"Cameron..."

"No, stay out of it Zack. Mr. Wheeler, you're being so prejudicial. You don't understand what I feel right now. In fact, none of you understand what I feel right now! I'm trying not to let go of the remaining drop of God-forsaken sanity in me. I'm trying to convince myself that I didn't see anything... that I didn't confirm my fucking suspicions but I can't because everything is real as hell. I just caught my best friend cheating on my sister with the best friend of the girl I'm going out with. I shouldn't be here right now. I should be back with my family sharing a cold one with my sister. The last thing I would want to do is to be subjected with these questions I don't want to answer for hours in this shitty quarter whilst facing a traitor. So please, just..." My voice had faded through out my rant. I had completely lost it at this point.

I wanted to run away. I wanted to beat up Zack. I wanted to comfort my sister. I wanted to be with my family. I wanted to hit rewind. I wanted to wake up from a living reality. I wanted 'unsee' things. I I wanted the earth to stop suffocating me.

"Cameron, for the love of Christ, build a bridge and stop whining like a three-year old brat," Mr. Wheeler countered. I was beyond done but he did not cease to rile me further, "Aren't you content yet? You almost broke your best friend's rib bones."

"Best friend? I don't tolerate traitors," I sneered.

"Cameron, c'mon man, haven't you beaten the life out of me enough?"

"You're lucky Mr. Simpson saved your sorry arse," I taunted Zack. He still possessed the exact same guilty face he had on since the moment I had caught him and Mackenzie.

Fucktard.

"You watch your language Mr. Lancaster," Mr. Wheeler warned.

"It's okay, I deserved it Sir," Zack muttered.

"Fuckin' aye you did!" I bit back.

"Quit it both of you! Cameron, aside from disruption of classes, violence and making an innocent passerby faint, your attitude and foul temper is testing my patience," Mr. Wheeler said right after banging his fists on the desk before us.

"Faint?" I questioned, my expression quickly switching from outraged to puzzled.

Zack and Mr. Wheeler looked at each other for a meager minute before Zack sighed as he rubbed his temples. I had apprehensively waited for a few seconds that seemed like ages before Zack slowly broke out the news to me.
