Rowan

"Do you remember what happened?" Dr. Jones asks me.

"Some of it. I remember some of the crash but that is it," I say.

He nods his head and then writes something down on his clip board. My dad is sitting down on the chair next to my bed while Val stands by him.

"Is she going to be okay? How long before we can take her home?" My dad asks.

"She just woke up so she needs to stay here at least another two days. We don't want to move her too fast. Let's let her rest for now. She needs rest at the moment. We'll keep an eye on her and if all looks good in the next few days you can move her to the hospital near you."

"Okay, but how long until we can take her home? Not in a hospital," Val asks.

"That is hard to tell at the moment. Rowan's injuries are severe. She just woke up. We need to make sure that she stays stable."

My dad nods his head and then they continue their conversation about what meds I'm on. I pretend to drift off so that when they are done talking they leave the room. Once I hear the door close I open my eyes again. The last thing I feel like dealing with right now is my dad yelling at me for car racing.

"Rowan!"

The door swings open and Chad runs in, followed by Luke and Josie. They're breathing heavy and Luke has coffee stain running down his shirt.

"You're awake!" Luke shouts.

"No. I'm a hologram."

"This is no time for jokes," Josie says.

"And this is no time to be yelling at me."

Chad on the other hand does not agree. I can tell he wants to yell at me by the way he is glaring at me.

"As much as I love seeing you idiots, do you mind if I get a few minutes alone with Chad?"

Luke and Josie look between the two of us before nodding their heads. When Luke passes by Chad he whispers something in his ear and then looks back at me to tell me he will be right outside. I thank him and watch as they close the door.

"Well, I'm alive," I say while smiling at him.

"Seriously? You really think this is a time for jokes?"

I sigh, knowing this is going to be difficult, "No. It's not. But it helps me get through the awkward situations."

"You almost got yourself killed! I've told you over and over how dangerous it is to race, especially since you are a girl. I know that it sucks and it shouldn't be that way but it is and if I could fix it I would but these guys who race they aren't good people and you didn't listen. You betrayed my trust, Rowan! You completely lied to me and ended up almost dying!" He's near to tears and my heart breaks for seeing the pain I've caused in him.

"Do you know what it was like to hear that you had been in an accident?" He continues. "My dad told me and I said no. Rowan wouldn't lie to me. But you know what? Rowan does what she wants so oops she's almost dead. The doctors told us you might not make it. Your dad couldn't stop crying. Warren keeps looking out the window as if this is all some shit nightmare and Eric!" He's holding back the tears and I look down at the pillow, afraid to face him. Tears are falling from eyes and I wish I could stop them.
