"Alec. I think you should get some sleep." Danaya tells me with a tired, croaky voice. Everyone is sleeping and I remained wide awake.
"No. I'm not letting anyone harm her so if that means staying up all night so be it." I reply.
"But-"
"Leave him be, Danaya. With every father I've seen since I've become a midwife, they don't rest until the baby comes. It's an instinctive act and he can't control how he is right now. His only thoughts are to protect his mate and pups from harm. Go back to bed, and get some rest." Dr. Wicks interrupts Danaya and makes her give up her argument and go back to sleep. I scope the area with just my eyes and there isn't a sound except for the cicadas chirping and the wind whipping around in the air.
"Uhhhh," I hear Valentina stirring, her voice laced with pain. Damn it.
"Valentina." I walk towards her to find her leaning on a tree trunk. I shake Dr. Wicks until she wakes up with a start and turns towards Valentina who's gripping her stomach. Sweat is dripping down to her gown and onto the thick sheets I put on her while she slept.
I look to Dr. Wicks for an explanation as to why Valentina is sweating profusely.
"She's transitioning to active labor. Her contractions are growing closer and that's probably why she woke up so suddenly. Hey, Valentina sweetie. How long have you been awake?" Dr. Wicks asks, kneeling to the floor to hold Valentina's head upwards so she can have an arch."
"For about an hour." Valentina puffs, letting out a loud blow of air and arching her neck inwards.
"How long are your contractions, sweetheart?" Dr. Wicks pushes Valentina's slick, sweaty hair out of her face.
"A-a-a ohh. About 4 minutes long. I want to push. Please let me push. I want---I want oohhh," Valentina squeezes her eyes shut and grabs ahold of a tree for support.
"We need to get her to the river," Dr. Wicks says and heads to the river where the medical equipment was. All I want is for her to have the babies and be okay. But from the way it looks right now I don't think she'll come out of this okay. What if she isn't strong enough to have them both.
"Alec. You coming?" Danaya asks while heading towards banks of the river holding Valentina up with her arm.
"Mhm." I reply and she then turns around and heads to the river, resting Valentina by the river.
"Alec I need you to pull off your shirt, pick up Valentina and put her in the water." Dr. Wicks orders me and I do as she says. I pull off my shirt and rest it onto the floor.
"Valentina. Look at me." She turns to me panting and sweating. She faces me and her breathing slows and her racing heart beat gradually slows down as well. I slip one of my arms behind her and the other under her legs and lift her up. I rest her into the warm water and it's helping to soothe the pain because she begins to relax and her face isn't twisting in pain anymore.
"Now go behind her and put her head on your chest."
I give Dr. Wicks a confused look and she sighs.
"Being in contact with you will calm her down. It's like a natural version of the epidural." Dr. Wicks explains and again I follow her orders. I sit in the river and then I pull her body closer to me between my legs and rest her head on my chest. I feel for her hands that hid in the water and interlock her fingers with mine. I start to kiss her forehead and put my chin on the top of her sweaty head.
