This is the second time she falls and it's me to blame again. I probably stressed her out again and once again the doctor has to check her again and see if she's okay. I don't know why my father is making her stay here, she'd be better off with her parents who're probably still looking for her. It's useless, though. Centuries ago my mother put a spell on the house so that if a traitor or anyone really was brought here they'd be protected, but I feel bad for Valentina because now her loved ones cannot find her.
"I'm going to find Valentina's parents and let her know where she is."
"No it's too dangerous Alec,"
"And you think keeping her here is any better? She went into a coma her first fall, and the reason for this fall is yet to be determined. I think it's unfair to selfishly keep her here, Father. You're being unreasonable."
"Unreasonable? Do you know how many Rogues and even other clans would love to have their hands around Valentina because of her bond to you, Son. Because of your recklessness almost two months ago she's in this mess. Don't blame your family for this mess now because it's all you. You need to tell her if you have real feelings instead of wasting everyone's time. This tension is not just bothering your brother, but me as well." My father tugs at his over worn sweater and takes a gulp of his bitter black coffee. I didn't know how to answer him because he's right, Valentina and my pups are the targets now and they're my heirs to the throne once they're born. They'll always be a threat that can be cut down, and I can only blame myself.
"You should be that last one talking, dad. We all know that you're in love with mom and yet you continue to keep her locked in that cell," I retort. He is the biggest hypocrite I know and he has the audacity to correct my faults. I leave the room and head towards the stairs.
I head towards Valentina's room to find the doctor and a nurse checking her tubes. I didn't feel anything but guilt, eating at me from the inside out.
"She's going to be fine. Her babies are helping her heal faster than anything I've ever seen." The doctor looked genuinely astonished; shuffling his glasses and flipping through random pages. His grayish hair and wrinkles that glide along the corner of his eyes like a fault line in the Earth show me that he's well experienced, so I trust him completely. He places his arm on my shoulder for reassurance but it only forces my guilt to deepen.
I take a deep breath and place a hand on one side of Valentina's hospital bed.
"Your father is allowing me to stay in your home for a couple of days until she wakes up. Please let me know when she does, okay?" The doctor gives me a small smile and pats my back before leaving and the nurse following closely behind him. Once the door closes I sit down on the plastic chair that pokes into my skin, my discomfort keeps me from focusing on Valentina. I shuffle around the chair looking for a comfortable position when the door swings open and a head of dark hair pops inside.
"Dad wants an update." Apollo smirks. I knew exactly what he was doing, trying to irritate me. But the burning hatred I felt before breathed it's last breath once Valentina fell the second time, it really isn't worth. The least I can do is let her be comfortable because we're forcing her to stay here.
"The doctor said she's fine, and we're hoping that she'll wake up by tomorrow the earliest." I run a hand through my greasy hair and wipe it on my sweats.
"Okay.... Just keep us posted too," Apollo sounds more offended than spiteful forcing an unwanted awkward silence to creep through and into the surface. Ever since Dessy we've had a strained relationship and no matter how hard we try, my brother and I have never been on decent terms for more than a decade at a time. It's gotten to the point where we've unknowingly given up on repairing our brotherhood and we only speak to tolerate each other rather than hold a good, deep conversation which ends up to be a lesson about morals. I look at Valentina one more time, she's slightly so colored, her curly hair crashes onto her head in waves, her thick long eyelashes serve as a black blanket to protect her eyes. I head towards the door and quickly close or behind me. The air has gotten tense since Apollo and Valentina have come to the castle unexpectedly.
I walk towards the largest window at home. The curtains are blood red with gold embroidered at the edges. I ask the maid to open the drapes and they tug onto the ends. It's ha out afternoon now, the light is spilling into the dark, depressing mood. This window would make anything shine brighter, even a brothel.
"This light is beautiful," Valentina's voice is hoarse from just waking up and so quiet even I barely heard it. I swing around to find Valentina at the entrance of the room, her hands nervously clamped together and her face is looking down at the floor. From here I could see that she was better and her skin color was back to normal, but I wasn't sure if she should be standing.
"Yeah. It is. I jump down the large sill and I shift my position so we're side by side but not touching. I can hear her breathing pattern change and guilt floods back full force because I can never love her the way she wants me to.
"Remember the night we first met and you said that you never thought about who your mate was and you didn't care?" She turns to me now, her eyes so bright and pretty.
"Yeah, I do." I remember everything about that night I was about to say then decided to keep it to myself.
"If you didn't care, why did you go to that party knowing who I am? You could've stayed away and we would've never met and I wouldn't be your burden!" A tear slipped from her cheek, her eyebrows were deeply furrowed.
I take a deep breath. I turn to her despite my desire to walk away. But I can't ignore her because she's right. She's always right.
"I'm sorry, I really-"
"Stop saying you're sorry all the time, Alec. I'm not weak and helpless just because I'm pregnant and I fell like a thousand times. I am just as strong as you and any other person living here," she takes a deep breathe closing her eyes and then starts again, "all I ever wanted was to meet you. I got my wish. And you're rude and cocky and moody and an ass. But you have a good heart. And I see you for who you are, not the way you carry yourself." She turns around and begins to walk away, but I grab her arm and spin her around.
"Tell me what you see." I'm so pissed right now. How dare anyone come tell me that the see me. She places a hand on my cheek, softly grazing my skin and I can feel myself calming down.
"I see a lone wolf whose been hurt beyond anything, and they're scared to let anyone in. I see a lone wolf who fears rejection. I see a wolf who needs his mate, but is too afraid to let her in. Don't be angry at me, please."
I move her hand from my face and look her dead in the eyes, "You're wrong."
She shrugs it off and gives me a lopsided smile, "If you say so," she says walking towards the hallway.
"Where are you going?" I ask her, my eyes following her movements.
"Who said I was going anywhere?" She turns around and places her hands onto her hips.
