A/N: Happy Easter!
I rushed over to Avi's house to apologise. He needed to hear it from me.
I knocked on his door. No response. "Avi, it's me. Scott" I shouted. I knocked again. No response. I repeatedly knocked on the door and there was no response. "I know you're angry at me and you should be. I was being a complete jerk and I was being insensitive." I shouted. I still got no response. I began getting a little worried. If he was sleeping, he would've gotten up by now.
I went over to one of his neighbors and knocked on their door. A man, probably around 40, opened the door. "Sorry to disturb you sir but do you know if your neighbour has gone anywhere?" I asked trying to hide my panic.
"Which neighbour?" He asked.
I looked at Avi's apartment number. "246" I answered.
"I meant their name" He replied. "I don't really remember the door numbers"
"His name is Avi. Avi Kaplan" I spoke trying to hide my irritation with the prolonging of this conversation.
"Oh Avi. He came back like 2,3 hours ago. He hasn't left his apartment" He finally gave me the answer I've been waiting for. My worry increased a heap ton.
"Thank you" I rushed back over to his apartment and continued to knock like crazy. I still got no response and actions began being more frantic. I searched my pockets for anything that could pick a lock. I found a hairpin...for some reason. It was an odd find but it would work.
I eased it into the lock and with a couple twists, I was in. The door slowly opened and I stepped in.
It was dark. The only thing that lit the apartment was the light from outside. I walked over to the light switch and the room lit up. It was still pretty dim lighting but it was better than complete darkness.
Broken glass was the first thing to catch my eyes. The smell of really strong alcohol entered my airways. There was an array of alcohol bottles on the floor and table.
As I walked further into his apartment, I saw him. "Oh my God!" I whisper shouted.
Avi was laying on the floor face down. I shook his shoulder and I got no response. I turned him over and his eyes were partially open. It was actually quite freaky. "Avi?" I tried shaking him. Nothing.
My overthinking made tears fall out of my eyes. I picked up my phone and called 911. "911, what's your emergency?"
"My friend his passed out and I don't think he's breathing." I spoke in a panicked tone.
"Where are the both of you?" She asked. I told her the address. "An ambulance is being sent to your location" The call cut off. While I waited, I hit a realisation.
This was all my fault.
No one else has ever brought him into this condition. No one except for me. It's all my fault he's currently unconscious. It's all because of me being greedy that he picked up that first bottle of alcohol. It's all my fault because I'm a horrible person who would hurt their best friend.
The ambulance arrived. "What is your friends name and what is your name? The woman asked me.
"My name is Scott Hoying and this is Avi. Avi Kaplan" I answered still panicked.
"Scott, how long has Avi been in this state?" She asked.
"I don't know. I just came here about 5 minutes ago and found him here. His neighbour told me that he has been hone for 2/3 hours" I answered.
Her and her colleague lifted him up on a gurney and wheeled him out of the apartment. I took Avi's house key and locked his door. I followed behind them. They let me ride in the ambulance. For the whole duration of the ride, I held his hand and never let go.
Once we arrived at the hospital, I was told to wait in the waiting area. So I did.
I waited. For as long as it took.
