Josh got to school early on Friday morning, only the fifth day of school. He made his coffee, then proceed to fix a cup for Devon. Two creams and two sugars, he recalled. He walked the cups back to the arts wing and stood in Devon's doorway. The girl was too focused on trying to get her desk in order, despite the day before, when it was in perfect order.

"Coffee for two?" Josh entered the room, setting her coffee on the aluminum desk.

Devon looked up from the clutter, a frustrated look on her face. She looked from the brown coffee cup to Josh.

"For you." He said.

"Oh um..." She picked up the cup, running her finger along the brim of the lid. Josh noticed how much more relived she looked. "Thank you," she smiled at him. Josh would remember this as the first time she smiled at him. "Nobody ever really does this for me,"

"It's kinda insane to think that, y'know?"

Devon gave him a look asking him to explain.

"You're a cool person. I don't see why nobody likes you,"

Devon let an an unsteady exhale, amused. "Sweetheart, I'm not cool. I'm an art teacher. It's lame."

"Well do you like it?" Josh put his free hand in his pocket, sipping his own coffee.

"Yeah. Of course I do,"

"Then it's not lame. It makes you happy. You're passionate about it."

Devon looked down and smiled shyly, taking a sip of her coffee. "But seriously. Thank you. It's one less thing I have to do today."

Josh smiled at the fact that she wasn't being rude to him. She wasn't making sarcastic comments and calling him vile names. She was actually being nice. He didn't want to say anything because he knew she was stubborn and would've immediately stopped.

Josh wanted to keep seeing her like this. He wanted to see her smile more. He wanted to see her laugh, maybe even until her sides hurt. He just wanted to see her not as stressed. He was able to tell she couldn't handle stress well, which made him wonder why she got the job in the first place.

Josh decided against saying something about her new found kindness. "How do you think today's gonna go?" he leaned on her desk with his back side.

"For starters, you should get your ass off of my desk," she's back at it again, Josh thought as he lifted himself off of the desk. "Second, I don't really know. Fridays days are usually good for me. It's a free day and the kids can do whatever they want with whatever supplies."

"Okay so," Josh pointed to himself. "Should I do that?"

"Whatever you want, Mr. Dun."

"Again, it's Josh, Miss Taylor."

Devon smiled. "Good. You don't have my respect enough to refer to me with my first name."

Josh let his mouth hang open. "Wow, and I was just thinking you were starting to like me." He put his hand on his chest in mock-hurt.

"Oh my," Devon stifled a laugh. "You say that like I actually like anybody."

"You like Tyler. And Jenna, his wife. She's the-"

"Kindergarten teacher. I know. Tyler does the choir."

"Yeah. Tyler actually told me about you." Josh mused.
