Chapter 41; Last Day

Katniss POV

  Today is my last day at work before I have to leave for the baby. I walk to the locked door of my office and unlock it. When I sit down I just take a deep breath knowing that I won't be coming back everyday. I know I will return, but not for a while.

  I see the person that will take my place for a while walk into my office. I am suppose to show her what my job is about and what she has to do.

  " Hi," I say kindly. " You are Celeste, right," I ask and she nods with a smile.

  " Yep and you are Katniss?," she asks me shaking my hand.

  " Yes, I am suppose to show you what you have to do," I tell her and she nods.

  " Okay no problem!," she says and she sits in the chair in front of my desk and I sit down behind my desk.

  " So this job isn't too hard. It's mostly just checking emails, taking calls...," I tell her.

  " Alright," she says. " Doesn't sound to bad yet." I continue.

  " Yep it isn't once you get the hang of it," I say. " So, when you get a call from someone you are suppose to help them with any questions they have about the business. All of the info you need to know is on the computer," I tell her.

  I bring her to my computer and tell her everything she needs to know. When she leaves there is nothing much to do. I look at the clock and it says 12:45pm. Workers keep coming in and wishing me good luck because they know I am leaving. That's when I see Nalla.

  " Katniss!," she says and comes over to my desk.

  " Hey!," I say as she comes closer to me.

  " What are you doing?," she asks.

  " Nothing at all," I admit. " I don't have anything else to do."

  " Great! Come with me," she says and I stand up.

  " Why?," I question her.

  " Just come," she says laughing and rolling her eyes. I follow her and she is pulling me pretty fast.

" Nalla, I can't walk that fast," I say giggling and she goes slower.

" Oh sorry!," she says slowing down a bit. We get to a little section in the building where we have meetings sometimes. When I get into the room I see a lot of pink balloons and a bunch of other workers in there.

  " Heyy!," everyone including Eliza yells happily when they see me come in.

  " Oh Hi!," I say surprised to see everyone standing up and coming over to me. " What's this?," I ask.

  " It's a little going away party mixed with a baby shower," Nalla tells me.

  " Oh thank you so much!," I tell everyone that was there. Mostly the people that I really talk to were there. I look around and see many bright pink balloons and cupcakes with pink icing.

  Eliza comes over to me and gives me a hug. " I'm gonna miss you when you go," she tells me. I nod.

  " I will miss you too," I reply.

  " I got your new addition something," she tells me holding out a pink bag to me.

  " Oh thank you!," I say. More people come up to me and congratulate me and wish me good luck.

  " Are you excited to be a mom," Kristen, another worker, asks me.

" Yea. I'm just not totally sure how to be one. But I guess I will figure it out," I say laughing as she laughs along.

" It isn't too hard. Babies are so cute though," she says smiling. Nalla comes up to me holding a cupcake.

" Oh Katniss, you should try one of these cupcakes. They're delicious," she tells me taking a bite.

" Okay," I say walking towards the cupcake rack and taking one. Nalla was right. They are delicious! The rest of the small gathering consist of chatting and congratulating me. It feels weird to be the center of attention.

I go back to my office with many balloons and bags in my hand. The day is almost over. I sit in my office and open the gifts. People here are so nice. They got me baby cloths for a girl and so many other things. When I am alone Nalla knocks on my door.

" Hey," she says softly as she walks in my room.

" Hey," I reply as she comes to me.

" I didn't want you to think that I forgot to give you something," she says handing me a medium sized bag.

" You got me something?" I ask her smiling.

" Of course I did!," she exclaims and I take the bag.

" Thank you," I say opening it. When I open it I see many baby clothes, pacifiers, and other things I could use for the baby. " Nalla, thank you so much," I say. There is a moment of silence.

" Im gonna miss you," she says softly and I look up at her.

" I'm gonna miss you too," I say and we stand up to hug.

" But when you have the baby, I'm coming to see you guys," she tells me and I laugh.

" Of course," I tell her. She helps me take the balloons and bags to my car and gives me one last hug before I go.

  " Good luck," she says when we pull apart.

  " Thank you," I reply.

  " Make sure you call or text me when your little one comes," she says patting my stomach.

  " I absolutely will," I laugh and wave goodbye as I get in my car. She goes back into the building as I pull off. 

  When I get home Peeta is already there so he helps me take everything in.

  " Did you have a party?!," he asks as he looks at everything I brought home.

  " Yea, pretty much," I say laughing. " I didn't expect you to be home."

  " Me either. But today wasn't really busy and I wanted to be here when you got home," he tells me.

"Okay," I reply and he gives me a kiss. We spend the rest of the night snuggled up in each others embrace.
