Chapter 5: Infuriation

"You...oh my god Tabitha I'm so sorry I-"

"Don't.Say.I'm.Sorry.Ever.Again." she says in a low, dangerous voice. I immediately back away, suddenly intimidated by the person sitting in front of me. Her eyes are filled with anger and...grief? Sadness? I can't tell.

"I'm sor-" I catch myself and bite my bottom lip. "I understand."

Grief, regret, devastation, so many sad emotions fill me. I felt too nosy now, dangit. I decided to just keep my mouth shut until the conversation moved onto something else.

She keeps her eyes trained on the vine, as it begins glowing brighter and brighter. Suddenly, Whitney screams in pain, a sound that would haunt me for the rest of my life. My eyes almost pop out of my sockets at the horrid sight of her crying for help, for relief from this pain. I pinch myself, praying this is a dream.

But it's not.

Damien's eyes are tightly shut as he takes shallow breaths and Jack just has a grim expression on his face. I grab Whitney's hand and trace circles, as I hear another scream from her.

"What is this doing?!" I yell over her ear-piercing scream, and Jack opens his mouth and shuts it, but opens it again.

"Healing the scar. Taking away the bacteria that might mess with her. It hurts but it's worth it." he says slowly, as he tightens his fists when he hears another scream.

This goes on for too long, until she finally stops screaming, and is just breathing. Sweat dribbles down her forehead, trailing a path from her forehead to her neck.

"Whitney? You okay?" I say, and she doesn't say anything, but squeezes my hand, which I take as an okay.

"Help me." Tabs says emotionlessly as she takes the now rotten vine that fell off of the cast and threw it away, her hard eyes staring at it as it falls behind some rocks. I knew if I said anything more, I would burst into tears.

I let go of her hand and help Tabs place Whitney on a more comfortable rock, in a lying down position. She seems to be asleep, soft snores escaping her nose. I smile at the sight, trying to get rid of the haunting screams in my head.

"Now what?" I whisper, not expecting anyone to hear, but Jack does.

Now, we find a way outta here." Jack says, as Damien automatically walks towards a duffel bag.

He zips it out, and inside is a large white box...or contraption. It's sleek and has antennas on the top, standing straighter than a pillar. His cobalt eyes observe the contraption once, before giving it to Jack. Jack looks at it again, and places it on the surface and unlatches the device. Inside, there's a very well hidden keyboard, characters I don't recognise written on it.

"Morse Code." Damien remarked when he saw my confused expression. "You'll learn it soon enough, don't worry. It's not that hard."

"Yea, just like learning French wasn't." I snap, and suddenly feel tingly inside. French? I learned french?

Damien's eyes snap at me, a full fledged grin appearing on his face.

"You remember??" He excitedly says as I nod, trying to concentrate on the thoughts in my head.

"The teacher....Miss....Applebaum?" I say, and he nods his head eagerly.

"Tu parle francais, madam?" he asks, and I shut my ears, trying to think.

Do you speak french, ma'am? That's what it translated into.

"Oui, je parle bien francais. Et toi?" I automatically say, and grin like a kid on Christmas. Damien shoots me a thumbs up.

Jack's eyes are trained on the keyboard as he furiously types away, his hands flying across the keyboard. A series of clicks can be heard, making my mind buzz. Finally, he stops and the antenna perks up, and a buzz can be heard. Suddenly, the machine whirs to life and the antenna begins rotating around in a circle, covering the entire cave in it's blue glow. My eyes widen at the sight, amazed by the magic this device can do. It continues making whirring noises, as Jack and Damien stare at the monitor that appeared after typing in more Morse Code.

"Nothing yet." Jack remarked, scratching a scar on his face.

"Give it time, this cave is huge." Tabs said, as she leans on the rock Whitney sleeps on. I sit next to her, hugging my knees tightly as I rest my head on them.

"Take a nap, you ought to be tired. The human body needs at least eight hours of sleep at least, especially at your age. And well...."

"What happen to me when I was in their lab?" I ask coldly, my muscles tensing when I have flashbacks of the lab, and the 'Doctor'.

"Well, i'm sure you woke up many times. They probably give you a memory forgetting serum that kept resetting your memory-"

"Wait, that kinda thing exists?!" I yell, and earn glares from all three of my siblings, and a grunt from Whitney.

"Yes. It does. Anyways, it'll probably come back in the form of dreams. That another reason I want you to sleep. We might deduce something use-"

"So you're basically using me?" I say sarcastically, in a joking manner, but the look on Tabitha's face makes me reconsider.

"I would say deducing clues from prior knowledge of the place, but using you works too." My jaw hangs open, stunned by her brutal honesty. So this is what I am? A tool for them?

"You're horrible!" I yell, not caring about how Whitney slowly stirs awake and the death glare Jack is shooting me and the widened eyes of Damien.

"You know that's not what she meant, sis! She was being sarcastic!" Damien says as I storm towards the cave I changed. He grabs my wrists and I snatch my hand away, glaring at him harshly.

"Yea sure it is. She's disgusting! I snap, and I look at her eyes as she glares at me.

"At least I'm not the nosy faking innocent girl who thinks she's better than everyone else!" she snaps, and my anger roars in, my logical side burning away in the wrath of my anger.

"You think you're so smart, don't you?! You think your some sort of living Albert Einstein?! Sorry to break it to you, honey, but you're nothing but a failed scientist!!!!" I yell, and suddenly an eerie silence falls over.
