"Hi."

Sam didn't respond.

I walked to her place by the window and set her medicine on a stool where she could reach it.

"You're just okay not knowing why i'm so sick?" Sam asked me worriedly.

I bent down so that I was level with Sam. "If you don't want to tell me, that's okay. Everybody has their secrets."

"Thank you pill boy. I mean- Jay."

Sam seemed distant today. I knew I needed to do something to cheer her up.

"Hey Sam?"

"Yeah?"

"Are you allergic to anything?"

"No. Why?"

"I'll be right back!" I excitedly rushed out of the room.

Sam waited with a huge grin on her face. Ahhhh... I loved that smile.

"Pill Boy?"

I burst in the door.

Sam burst out into immediate laughter.

"What?" I asked.

"Your... Your hair!" Sam bent over in laughter again, gasping and clutching at her chest.

I ran to the mirror. Flower petals hung from my head, pink and fragrant. I couldn't help but laugh myself. "Dang it."

"What?"

"I ruined the surprise." I pointed to my hair.

"Wha-"

Grinning, I pulled a drooping flower from behind my back. Most of its petals had fallen off on my trek back to Sam's room. "Oh no... I'm so sorry..."

Sam just sat there holding the tiny, mangled flower in her fingers. "Oh. Pill boy. It's..." She gasped. "It's beautiful."

"Well, you know... I just thought... and... I-"

My breath was cut short as I was enveloped in a hug. Sam was hugging me. I hesitantly wrapped my arms around her back, and uncomfortably held them there. Nobody other than my family had ever hugged me.

"Thank you, Jay." She whispered into my neck.

She gently released me and carried the flower away. Sam cradled it and stuck the purple flower by the windowsill.

I was still blushing by the time Sam looked back at me.

A silent exchange was held between us when I left, as we were too busy smiling.
