"Hey Sam."
"Hi Jay." Sam frowned.
"I brought some things for us to do today, if you want to do them." I gave her a half smile. "And some candy bars!"
That made Sam smile.
"What kind?"
"Just Hershey's bars." I handed one to her.
"Perfect." She unwrapped hers quickly. "So what did you bring?"
"Board games. Uh... Clue, Battleship, and Connect Four. Hope you like them. That's all I have."
"I love board games! I used to play them all the time with my mom." She took a quick seat on the floor.
"Good." I sat down beside her. "Which one?"
"Battleship!" Sam exclaimed, mouth still partially full with chocolate.
I opened the game out, mind distracted. For a moment, I stared out into nothing. "Hey. Pill boy! Jay! Hello?" Sam waved her hand in front of my face.
"Sorry." I hurriedly placed my pieces. "You can go first."
"A1." Sam bit her lip.
"Miss. B2?"
"Miss. B6?'
"Jay, are you sure you haven't seen my sketchbook?"
"Yeah." I looked away and sighed.
Sam put a hand across her forehead and flopped down on the floor.
"What's wrong?"
"I- I just... wish I wasn't stuck in here with this stupid heart disease. If I could leave this place, Jay, I would give you so much. You give me everything, and all I have is... me. I just wish I could give you something more. Look. Here, I was depressed and moping around my room, while you were buying me chocolates and playing board games to make me happy." Sam ran her fingers through her hair.
"Sam." I took her hand. "All I need from you is, well, you. I don't need anything else from you. You give me so much more than you think."
We were silent for a minute.
Then, Sam spoke up. "I still wish we could do at least one thing on the bucket list today."
"Me too." I grabbed it from Sam's bed. "Hmmm... Want to learn a new language?"
"How?" She proved her point.
"Save a life? Haircut? Food fight?"
"No. No. And no."
I sighed. "Well, there is only one left that we can do right now."
"What's that?" Sam grabbed the list from my hands and examined it. "I don't see one."
She turned back to me with her brilliant blue eyes. The world slowed down for a moment. Sam placed her hand on my chest and searched my green eyes. "You sure?" I whispered.
"Well, there is one." She smiled.
My hand found its way onto her cheek. I could feel the warmth of her breath on my face. I watched her carefully, quietly. I watched every blink of her eye, every flush of her freckled cheeks, every breath from her nose. Sam's lips parted.
I leaned ever closer, as did she. Gosh, Sam was beautiful. She placed a hand around the back of my neck.
Then, slowly, I pressed my mouth onto hers. Sam's eyelids fluttered closed in that little moment of ours. Her soft lips tasted sweet against mine. She pressed on, ever closer. Then, very gently, Sam pulled away.
She held me there for a moment longer, the only thing keeping my feet on the ground. A grin found its way onto my face. I must have looked stupid right then, smiling as big as I was. But, I didn't care. She smiled too, and then leaned her head against my chest.
The lyrics to my song rang through my head.
"But baby if you can't fly,
I'll be your wings in the sky.
And if your heart fails you,
I'll give you mine to beat to."
Sam was my best friend, the sun to my rainy day. We stayed there holding each-other for a long time. Sam didn't have to give me anything more. I liked her just the way she was.
