I drove forward, towards the hospital. Sam was in the seat beside me, fast asleep.
The plan of going to the amusement park was a success. Sam loved every bit of it. I smiled to myself as we drove on. She loved me too. Sam loved me. She told me as soon as I had told her.
We had ridden a couple more rides before heading off. Sam had complained of aches in her jaw and back, but thankfully turned out to be fine. For a moment I was really worried that something might happen to her. I was so glad that nothing had.
Cars rushed past ours as I sped up, turning onto the highway. I glanced quickly at Sam. Somehow, I couldn't stop. Her chest rose and fell gently. She was so pretty even when she was asleep.
No matter what, I was determined to find a way to heal Sam. There HAD to be a way. And I was going to find that way. We loved each other and nothing was going to get between us. Dreams could come true, right? They had to this time.
Even if the world was pulling us apart, fate was stronger. When the world had given up hope on Sam, we hadn't. And that was enough. Slowly, slowly, fate was pulling our strings tighter and tighter. And soon enough, Sam and I would have our very own happy ending.
I sighed a breath of relief as we pulled into the hospital parking lot. Now, to wake up Sam. I laughed to myself. This might be more difficult than I planned.
"Hey, Sam. We're here." I whispered.
She didn't move. I laughed again.
"Come on, Sam." I shook her shoulder gently. "It's time to wake up."
Again, she didn't move. Man, she really was a heavy sleeper!
I turned the car key and the engine rumbled to a halt. "Sam! Get up!" I was practically yelling now.
Still, Sam just lay there. A flash of worry came over me.
"SAM!" My voice cracked.
Sam was still, unmoving. I gasped and held my hand to her chest. I didn't feel anything except an occasional thump. Red flags popped up in my mind.
"SAM! Get up!" I yelled, beginning to drag her out of the car.
"SAM! NO! Don't do this to me! Please!"
Tears began to fall down my cheeks and I wobbled on my legs. I couldn't carry her anymore.
"HELP!" I lay on the ground beside her, praying Sam would get up.
Somebody must have noticed me because nurses were rushing out. Soon enough there was a stretcher out to get Sam. I must have looked ridiculous, but I didn't even care.
Voices filled my head of the nurses screaming orders as I lay there, helpless on the pavement. One caught my attention, ringing through my head over and over.
"HEART ATTACK!"
