Chapter 5

I woke up to May shaking me. She stood next to me and eventually she stopped once I sat up.

"The first drawing is today." she said with excitement.

"Why are you so excited?"

"Because you and I have always wanted to go to Earth and now we might."

"We barely have a chance to go. Do you know how many people are in that drawing?"

"No, do you?"

"Good point."

"Just get up so we can go, I want to stand next to you."

"Ok I'm getting up."

It had been about three months since they first announced they were going to do this drawing, and May has been excited about it ever since. I quickly got out of bed and got dressed. May walked back in the room and we walked as we joined the rest of the people that had already gathered. We waited until someone started speaking.

"Today is the day of the first drawing." He announced as another person walked up carrying a big box. When he reached the other man, he set the box on a table.

"We will now pull the first name out of this box, but first I would like to thank you all for your bravery."

He pulled the little slip of paper out of the box and I never even heard the name being read. It was like I had gone deaf for a minute or two. The only way I found out who won was when May was jumping and shaking my shoulder that brought me back to reality.

"You won, Raley go up there!" May shouted in my ear as I snapped back to reality.

"What?"

"Didn't you hear him? Go up there."

"Raley Rowe? Can Raley come up here please?"

May gave me a little nudge to get me started, but my whole body felt numb. Eventually I realized what was happening, and I finished moving up to the guy in front of the crowd.

"Thank you Raley for being brave enough to participate in this."

It was weird that he was saying that when we didn't have a choice, but I still nodded, I was still shocked and didn't really know what to say.

"You will have a few days to get ready,and then you will be the first one to go to the Earth."

"Ok." I finally managed to say something.

"Ok everyone, please celebrate for Raley, she is very brave and she is about to take a big risk for us."

I walked out towards the crowd and walked directly back to my room. I ignored all the people clapping and whistling. I wanted to get out of there, I didn't realize at first that it was really happening but once I did I was so scared. I sat on my bed and soon after I heard May walk in.

"What's wrong?" She asked me.

"Everything, my name was actually drawn from that box."

"Yeah, you won."

"No, no I didn't win anything, there is no prize here."

"You get to live on Earth."

"Yeah assuming I make it there."

"What?"

"You heard him, this is really dangerous I probably won't even make it to Earth."

"Well mom and dad would want you to do this."

"I have to do this, I don't have a choice, whether mom and dad want me too or not." I started to yell at her.

"We've always wondered what Earth was like, and now you are going to know more than any of us."

"Yeah, I know I've missed Earth this whole time even though I've never even been there, but I'm scared."

"You will be fine, I know it." She looked me in the eye and rested her hand on my shoulder. "I promise you'll be ok."

"Ok."

"You want to come eat?"

"No, I'm going to skip dinner."

"Ok."

I laid in my bed for the rest of the night, and eventually sleep finally took me away.
