After around a month of trying different jobs, I finally was going to be put into one. With anticipation, I waited outside of the Homestead, for what felt like hours.
Pacing back and forth was the only thing that kept me calmer. Finally Thomas came out.
"So, what was the verdict?!" I looked at him in excitement, yet he shone none. With a sad, weary tone he told me to follow him in.
The groans and moaning that came as I walked to the front made me worried. I could hear some cursing me out, and others yelling cat calls. Finally I sat in a chair infront of everyone. My eye caught Newt, he looked angry and he was cursing under his breath. Minho stood proud, but had a worried face on him. Thomas sat me down saying sorry and Chuck looked happy as ever.
"Sorry?" Thomas ignored my question and sat down in his chair next to Newt.
"Jay, we have decided your job. We are giving you mercy and you are allowed to back out."
"What do you mean, Alby?" I looked up and him. He had that same sad weary face on.
"A lot of the boys disagreed," He looked at Newt and Thomas, "but we all agreed that this job is what you were best at."
"So, what is it?!" I looked at Alby in annoyance. He was stalling; I hated when people stalled with me.
"Jay, you're a runner." I knew a smile ran across my face. Chuck cheered, and so did some of the other Gladers. Thomas urged a smile and clapped, so did Minho. Minho put two thumbs up and mouthed 'good job.'
Newt was the total opposite. He got up and walked out. His face still in a scowl frown. Immediately I got up to see what was up.
"Hey, Newt, what's the matter. Aren't you happy about me?" Newt stopped and turned around towards me.
"Happy? Happy!?" He laughed, "How can I be happy that you are going into the Maze? That you are going out there and risking your bloody life. Jay, I-"
"Why are you so protective of me? Huh? It's my life, and my choice. You don't tell me what is best for me or not, it's not like you're my brother or anything. I don't have to listen to you. Why? Just, why are you like this all of a sudden? Huh?!" I yelled this at Newt. My blood boiled with anger.
"Because you, I-" He paused, "Jay, I care about you. You're my friend and I can't lose you." Newt's voice cracked, "I can't lose you. I don't want you to go insane, see things that will scare you for life. Do things that you regret." With tears in his eyes, Newt looked down at his leg.
"Newt, I'm," I pulled him into a hug, "I'm sorry Newt. I really am. Sorry for yelling at you, but I will be fine. I promise nothing will happen to me, promise." Newt hugged me tighter. He was taller than me and nudged his head into my shoulder more. I could feel his warm tears drip down, and patted his back for comfort.
Newt was like an older brother to me, and it was rude of me to yell at him like that. I closed my eyes to remember the moment longer, but something came to memory.
~~
It was a kid. She was playing on a sing in her backyard. "Jay!" The little girl responded, me. I ran up to a dirty blond hair women. She had a British accent like Newt. "My little bean." The women tickled me.
"Mum, this isn't fair. Why is Jay going to America and not us?" A small boy with dirty blond hair walked up. He looked like Newt.
"Because, Newt, Jay is going with your father. You and I are going to go next week. I need to work, so." The women smiled.
"Mum," The voice seemed to be my own. a slight accent, but not much. "I want to stay with Newt, not Dad."
"Well, you're going to see your brother soon."
~~
I push Newt away when I opened my eyes. Newt was my brother. Than what happend to my accent, my hair, my family. Why was I leaving? Why is that the last memory of Newt I have? The last memory of my family I have.
"What? Did I do something to make you uncomfortable?" Newt looked at me in confusion.
"um, uh." I stumbled back and Thomas caught me.
"Hey, Jay, you alright?" Thomas helped me up. I was shaking and Thomas pulled me in to stop me. "Did something happen?" I looked at Newt and only saw my brother.
"N-No." I ran away from them. "I-I just need some time." I ran off.
"Jay!" Newt's voice faded in the back as I ran into the Deadheads. I stopped at a pond. Tears ran down my face, but I had no idea why.
My reflection was like what Chuck said. I had bright blue eyes, and did look like Newt a bit. My hair was still a dirty blond, but it had black streaks throughout it. The only thought that ran through my head was that Newt was my brother.
More tears ran down my face. I felt someone touch my shoulder and looked at the reflection. Minho knelt down next to me.
"What happened, Shank? If you don't want to talk about it, then I understand; but you really freaked Newt out back there." Minho sighed and put his arm around me. "What ever made you freak back there, you can get through it." Minho looked at me and smiled.
"Well," Minho was my closest friend in the Glade right now. Plus, he was going to be my running partner before I can go on my own. "I had this weird memory flash when I was hugging Newt. Minho, Newt. He is my-my." The words did not come out. I sighed.
"What is it shank? Spit it out." Minho turned me towards him.
"Newt is my brother." My heart felt like it sank. I could not believe that Newt was my brother.
"What?! Woah! That actually makes sense now."
"It does?" Minho nodded his head.
"Newt's brotherly instincts just kicked in. Plus, he told me that he had a similar dream, but had no idea what it meant; so in the end, we agreed to ignore it." Minho had a sorrowful face on him. "I'm really sorry I did not tell you earlier, or put the pieces together until now."
I smiled at him. "That's alright, slinthead." I laughed and Minho punched me in the arm telling me not to call him that again.
