"Wake up Greenie." Minho flipped the hammock, which caused me to fly out. My head hits the ground and it hurt like klunk. I looked up furiously at Minho walking away. Sighing I made my way up.

Newt was out of his bed. Weird. I gathered my bags, grabbed lunch, and headed toward the Maze wall. It was time for me to begin. I finally was able to see what was behind those walls, and hopefully find a way out of here. More than anything I wanted Newt and I to find our parents. Newt did not remember mom or dad, but I at least remember what mom looked like.

"Hey, Minho, Jay is here." Thomas yelled this as I approached the rest of the runners. Minho smiled and told me I was with him and Thomas. Thomas smiled, but looked away quickly.

Was last night a confession? Did I say or do something to wrong him? I wondered why Thomas was blocking me out. I was going to approach him, but Newt caught my attention.

"Hey."

"Be careful and don't get hurt. Promise me you will come back."

"Newt I'll -" Newt grabbed me on the shoulders and looked at me sternly.

"Promise me." His eyes glistened. Newt was really taking up the older brother act quickly and seriously.

"Promise." I smiled and gave him a kiss on his cheek. Minho called me over as the other runners ran in. We said our goodbyes and I ran off.

Newt's POV

She was gone. I had faint memories of Jay and I when we were younger, but she was still my sister. I had years to make up and replace, and that was exactly what I was going to do.

After around five minutes she disappeared from my sight. Sighing I walked away towards the Med-Jacks. The sun was just rising and the other gladers ran around.

Finally when I did arrive at the Med-Jacks, the sun was already up and rain clouds were coming out.

Great, if my leg did not have enough pain. Rain always caused my leg to act up and be in pain. Winston was sitting down getting a cut on his arm treated.

"I guess all bloody slicers get hurt at one point. Looks like it's going to scar." I laughed. Winston just gave me a cruel look.

"Very funny Newt. I'll live through it though. Nothing to worry about, right?" Winston cringed at the alcohol on his arm. Everything seemed fine, so I ran down to meet Alby in the Homestead.

"Alby." I saw him standing in the middle of all the seats. "What is wrong?" He sat in a chair and pulled another one next to him. Commanding me to sit.

"Newt, I heard about you and Jay. It's great news, but it's risky. As a runner, she can get seriously hurt, and I know you can't go through something like that again. What if she jumps like you did? It might just run in the family and-" I cut him off.

"No, she promised me that she would be safe. Jay is not like me, she is better. Happier and braver. Not to mention she is faster than I have ever been and ever bloody will be. Yeah she is a shank runner, but she is one of the best. What if it does run in our family? She is strong and can overcome it." I did not want to admit that I actually think it is possible.

"I trust you Newt. That is why you are second in command, but this, Jay. I fear the worse." Alby put his hand on my shoulder.

"And I fear that she will do great things." I laughed, trying to change Alby's thought process.

"Are you sure you want her as a runner? It is risky." Alby put his hands on his hips and sighed.

"I know it's risky, but let's just give her a week."

"Three days, and if she does one mistake, she is out." Alby walked out. I was worried more about Jay. She was dying to become a runner, and if she is like me, or does a mistake like Alby said, she is going to get hurt.

My leg ached from the humidity. When was I going to tell Jay, if I told her. Jay is the closest thing to the family I don't even remember.

There was nothing to do today, so I just hung out with Chuck. Watching him take down a small tree stub. I offered to help, but with the pain I could not be on my leg too much.

Eventually the rain came down and everyone had to stop their work.

"Newt, they aren't coming back? The doors are going to close soon." Chuck's voice disappeared in my head. All I could think about is what could have happened to Jay.

Around an hour later the doors started to creak. We all ran out to see if they were coming, but saw nothing. We already had three runners return and only three were left. Minho, Thomas, and Jay. My heart was racing and I began to panic.

"Wait, I see them!" Chuck yelled this and my attention returned to the Maze. Minho and Thomas was dragging someone. Jay.

I ran and grabbed a wooden rod and put it in between the closing walls. "Hurry, it won't stay!" The quickened their pace and were almost here. Please hurry. I can't loose Jay, not again.

The stick snapped, and everyone jumped back from the debris. They were almost going to make it. Minho and Thomas through me Jay. Minho grabbed Thomas' arm and jumped through before the doors closed.

Thomas' leg almost got caught, but barely made it. They both panted and fell onto the ground. Thomas checked his leg and then fell back again.

Jay was laying in my arms unconscious. "Chuck, get her to the Med-Jacks." Zart and Gally took her to the Med-Jacks.

"What the bloody hell happened out there!?" I yelled at the two of them. "I thought you promised that she wouldn't get hurt."

"We did." Minho panted, "She disappeared. One of the walls changed while we were out there and she disappeared. We heard a scream and when we found her she was on the ground laying in a pile of blood."

"There was no sign of Grievers or any other Glader. Nothing, just her and blood. She wasn't stung, so we have no idea what it was." Thomas stood up and looked at me. I was so furious I punched him in the jaw.

"Woah! Newt!" Minh jumped up and grabbed me.I just couldn't help myself from hitting him, but he had promised to keep her safe and instead, she was hurt.

"Bloody Slinthead." I got out of Minho's grasp and headed towards the Med-Jacks.

My blood boiled, but I had to check on my sister. What happened out there?
