It was October 31st, and the air was chilly. A light fog blanketed the land, and frost could clearly be seen on fallen leaves. The patterns the frost traced on windows and plants were exquisite, but underappreciated. It was night time, and the moon had just freshly risen on the horizon, a glowing orb suspended in the dark sky. On such a night, people locked themselves in their homes and hoped that they would be safe from whatever lay out in the darkness.

On the night of All Hallows Eve, the veil between the magical world and the real world was weakest. It marked the night when witches were said to prowl, and goblins to run rampant in the streets. The people hid fearfully in their cottages, afraid to open their doors or draw their curtains. Well, everyone was afraid except for a lone man.

The young man sat alone in his home, curtains drawn so he had a full view of the outdoors. He lived in the woods, away from other houses and was actually the healer of his village. People came to him with all sorts of ailments, and he was able to use magic to cure them. The darkness and taboo of All Hallows Eve did not frighten him in the least. He knew that whatever lay beyond his front door couldn't be as bad as some of the other things he'd dealt with in the past.

His magic was strong, and though he almost strictly used it to heal he could also use it to summon creatures from the beyond. The beyond was what he called the parallel world that housed all the magical creatures and people like him. He had left that world to start a life of helping people on earth, and was happy where he was. There was just one thing he felt he was missing...

The man longed for a companion to live with him. On many occassions he had sought one out, but it never seemed to work out. It didn't even have to be a romantic companion, he simply wanted someone that he could talk to when he was feeling lonely. How he wished the people of the village didn't fear him so much.

Magic was usually shunned by the people, as it was seen as witchcraft or the works of the devil. The only reason the village accepted the young man, was because he had saved one of the council of elders from a fatal disease. The council had decided that he wasn't dangerous, and was valuable to the people of the land. They even suggested he go see the king, and live in the palace as an advisor and healer.

The young man had turned down such an offer, wanting to remain where he had been most of his life -in his little cottage in the woods. Nobody quite understood his decision, but he had his reasons. There was always a reason for everything he did, and he was actually quite intelligent when it came to decision making.

Now, there he was on All Hallows Eve, staring out the window as if daring some creature to show itself. It was not long before one did. A small glowing faerie appeared in his garden, her little wings fluttered as she delicately landed on a flower. He watched her with a blank face, taking in the beautious creature. In an instant, she caught sight of him and smiled. He returned the smile as a show of friendship, and went out into the garden to greet the graceful being. Immediately she landed on his outstretched hand, making herself comfortable.

"Hello there, Alice." The man greeted, cupping his hand so the Faerie would feel more secure.

She smiled, and fluttered her light green wings in happiness at being remembered. "Hello Lukas, long time no see! How has it been living in the human world?" She asked, tiny voice sounding like bells.

"It's been wonderful. Yet I still need to find myself a companion, or possibly a familiar." Lukas replied, sighing. Familiars were like a sort of pet for magical people, witches, and wizards. They could help them channel magic, cast harder spells, and were in general great companions. Lukas himself was hoping to find himself a familiar on that patticular night. If he could not, he would settle for going to the kingdom and living among the royals to keep from being lonely.
