((Trigger warnings: Depression, mentions of suicide, foul language))

Lukas always felt as though he were being watched. He couldn't understand why, or what was really going on with him. In his childhood he had made an imaginary friend to play with, and thought that maybe some part of his mind still believed in the figment of his imagination.

"Lukas Lukas watch this!" An energetic voice yelled, catching the attention of a small blond boy who sat alone in his backyard. The voice came from seemingly nowhere, and couldn't be heard by anyone but Lukas himself. He turned to see his imaginary friend Mathias sitting up in a tree. The imaginary friend laughed, then leaped from the tree to stand in front of Lukas with a broad smile.

"When we're older, I want you to marry me!" Mathias exclaimed, beaming and hugging Lukas. The human smiled slightly, hugging back even though his friend made him very cold when they hugged.

"Are boys allowed to get married?" Lukas asked, looking up at his slightly transparent friend. His mother was a woman of the church, and had never told him that it was okay to marry another boy.

"Yep! We can get married and be together forever and ever!" Mathias had replied, making young Lukas beam and twirl around on the grass until he fell down giggling. His friend lay beside him, reaching over to hold his hand. They stared at the sky for the rest of the day, talking and sharing secrets until Lukas' mother called him in for dinner.

Lukas sat at his desk, studying from a large textbook. He was thirteen, and had been going to a prestigious school for intelligent teens. Schoolwork was of utmost importance to him, and he began pushing his imaginary friend away more and more in favor of the reality before him.

He flipped the page, and felt a cold hand on his shoulder. Turning, he noticed Mathias standing there, more transparent than ever as if he were fading. "Want to go outside and play?" He asked, looking to his friend hopefully.

Lukas shook his head, and got back to his schoolwork. Behind him, Mathias sighed, and disappeared into nothingness... "I'll come home when you need me." He said, no longer needed by the only one he held so dear.

~~~~~~(timeskip back to present day)
Lukas was in his early twenties, and had forgotten all about his imaginary friend... until depression hit. He had begun to isolate himself from others, and hole up in his apartment. He would forget to attend classes at his college, and sometimes sleep well into the day. The feeling of being watched grew stronger and stronger, and he began to grow paranoid that someone was following him.
One night, he decided to take a go at drinking his problems away. A few bottles later he was laughing his ass off in bed for no apparent reason, depression relieved for then. It was in that moment that he felt someone laying beside him and turned to look over.
Sitting next to him was a slightly transparent man, around the same age as him. He was taller than Lukas, with spikey blond hair, blue eyes, and a muscular build.
Lukas scooted away, still alarmed even in his drunken stupor. "Who the hell are you?" He demanded, finding the man to be somehow familiar.
"Don't you remember me?" The man asked, sounding as sad as he currently looked. "I'm your friend Mathias. I promised to come back when you needed me."
Lukas was stuck for a moment, thinking back to his childhood blearily. "Ohja... you wereimaginary though." He slurred, pointing at the apparition accusingly.
Mathias shook his head. "No Lukas. I'm a ghost. I died in the house you lived in in your childhood, and couldn't pass to the other side. So I stayed many years until you came along and befriended me." He explained, knowing he'd likely have to explain again when Lukas was sober. "As you grew up, I made myself the same age as you to be able to relate to you better."
