As time seemed to pass, there was no sign of Amanda anywhere. It was like she fell off the face of the earth. "There's no sign of her? Anywhere? That's preposterous.." David hissed at the police. "She's ten years old. There's only so many places she can be! Perhaps you're not looking hard enough!" He barked at them.
To get as far away from South Hampton as she could, Amanda did whatever it took to sneak into cabs and trains, or busses. She finally grew tired of running and came to a stop in some small town. Getting a little hungry, Amanda came to a stop at some small diner on the Main Street. As she sat down and got her food she ordered with the small cash she was able to find in her dad's billfold, she heard the waitress talking to her. "Hey kid. You okay? Where's your parents?" Amanda looked at her nervously. Someone had already gotten word? How was that possible? She grabbed her sandwich and took off out of the store at a run. "Hey kid!" The owner yelled
Amanda ran as fast as she could, looking back now and then till she ran out of breath and came to a stop hiding in an alleyway. She needed to come up with a plan . But what.
Once Amanda was able to catch her breath, she continued to carry on. She knew she would have to find a spot to stay for the evening hours till she could figure out what her next plan should be. Hearing the sound of his phone ringing, David quickly grabbed it. "Hello? Did you find anything?" He asked seeing that it was the station's number. "Some diner owner said he saw a little girl stop by not too long ago and had found her missing person's photo. She seemed to be quite in a hurry." David took a deep breath. So Amanda was at least alive... "Where was she?" He asked. David looked shocked. "What the hell was she doing down there in a city like that?" He hissed aloud more to himself than to the police.
"We have some entrances blocked off in the city so if she tries to escape, we will be able to catch her sir." David sighed a little. "Thank you." He muttered. As Amanda began to run towards the edge of town, she noticed the street blocked off and suddenly got nervous. She knew, or at least she assumed, that they had to be there for her. Amanda quickly turned down another street to change route, finding a better exit to exit the city limits.
"What! That's impossible! She was just there!" David yelled. "She has to be hiding there somewhere. I know my daughter!" David grabbed his jacket. He knew he should stay in case Amanda did decided to return home, but instead, once he got his keys, he hopped into the car and took off towards the small town.
When Amanda thought that she would be safe again, she entered the next town and found a small abandoned building she would be able to stay in. A few days had passed where Amanda decided to stay where she was. Not wanting to give herself away. She was certain that stupid worker at the diner told her off. Which was why the streets were blocked. But now Amanda couldn't ignore the hunger any longer. She needed to get some sort of food.
Amanda glanced out the window to make sure nobody was nearby or had followed her before she slipped out of the cabin and made her way into the main street of town where the shops were. She tried to make herself blend in as best she could. Even stealing a nearby hat off one of the racks from one of the outside shops so she couldn't be recognized. However, her next stop she wasn't so lucky. As Amanda grabbed a loaf of bread to take with her from one of the stands, she heard someone yell after her. "Stop that girl!" They yelled. Amanda glanced back a split second seeing someone rushing after her. She didn't realize however, there was someone standing in front of her. Amanda glanced up looking frightened. The woman eyeing her gave her a small grin.
"Did you pay for that bread?" She asked in a stern voice. Amanda took a deep breath and took a step back shaking her head. "N no.. But you don't understand.." "Where are your parents? Shouldn't they be with you?" Amanda bit her lip trying to think of something to say. But she couldn't. "Why don't you come with me?" The woman said. "My daddy told me not to talk to strangers.." Amanda stated firmly.
After a while, the woman was finally able to get Amanda to come with her to the station. Amanda did whatever she could so they could let her go, but they weren't budging. She was losing her touch. She almost always was able to get her way. She shook her head fiercely when she heard where they were taking her. "No! Please! I can't go there!" She whimpered. "Young girl. Unless you tell me the truth. I have no choice. I need to keep this town safe. And everyone safe." The officer told her.
"Ah. Mrs. Lair. I have brought a patient in for you." The woman said as she entered the orphanage. Amanda gulped as she looked at the two women. They seemed to know each other. They had all plotted this... She thought.
"Come with me Amanda." The woman by the name of Mrs. Lair said motioning for her to follow down the hall." Amanda finally felt a little defeated. And she was getting tired of running after all. She even missed her dad. But she couldn't go back with Victoria still there. At least this seemed to be better than the possibility of being put back in that crazy institution.
Once Amanda was left alone to her new room they had set up for her, She glanced out the window, watching some of the kids pass by. She needed to get out of this place. And far away. She need to come up with a plan.
